Anakin had the students meet him in the gym today.

"Good morning, class," he said, removing his cloak ~~overdramatically because that's how Anakin rolled~~ and unhooking his lightsaber hilt from its usual place on his belt. "It's come to our attention that there is a gun-dispensing vending machine in the dorm lobby. If you don't know how to use a weapon already, don't be an idiot and buy one now. The administration certainly didn't install that. In fact, I remember being a student when the ban on weapons in the dorms was enacted, in no small part because my best friend shot a guy who completely deserved it in the ass."

Someone was still bitter about having to lock his lightsaber away.

"Today you can either discuss the ethics of teenagers using weapons, or if you're already trained in them, use the class to either work out here--I'm able to spar against you if you use anything with a blade--or head to the gun range and practice your shooting."

Anakin shrugged. "Just in case. It is invasion season, after all."

Should teenagers know how to use weapons? Do you?

"I don't personally but why shouldn't a teenager use a weapon?" Flick asked, shrugging. "If they know what they're doing, putting it in their hands is gonna be the same as putting it in the hands of a trained adult."

"Does the teenager's age matter to you?" Anakin asked. "If a fourteen year old with a gun more or less disturbing than a seventeen year old?"

Flick shrugged a shoulder. "Doesn't matter to me. I've seen more disturbing things than a kid with a gun."

"Doesn't that kind of, like, depend? In a combat situation, I think people should leave it to those who're professionally trained." Karina hesitated. "Which does include some teenagers on the island."

And herself. But she was skipping over that. Also, her guns were ice guns, which seemed less horrible than... normal... guns.

"But if you only know how to shoot because you've gone out hunting with your parents, you're probably not going to be much help in a combat situation, right? It takes more than knowing how to point and pull the trigger to be an asset, not a liability."

Anakin nodded. "Do you think we should teach more combat courses, then, or will that just traumatize students who don't come from such a militant background?"

Karina frowned at him.

"I think there should be evacuation procedures in place to get all non-combatants to safety, even if that place has to be a safe spot on the island, whether or not they want to fight," she said frankly. "I don't understand why there isn't. And I think that everyone who wants to be considered a combatant should have to take an exhaustive battery of tests to prove their capabilities before being deemed a combatant."

She had absolutely no problems being deemed a non-combatant despite being a legally authorized superhero in her world.

"If it was up to me, I'd say anyone who isn't legally an adult in this world would automatically be disallowed from testing, but I know that how it works in my world… isn't here."

She pursed her lips before continuing. "So, no, I don't think more combat lessons should be taught. Self-defence courses, I can't say anything against, but anything that advocates combat and placing deadly weapons into peoples' hands… I'm not okay with that."

"I think the problem with a safe haven is that there's no guarantee that everyone could get to it. It would have to be accessible to students and people in town and our usual fall-back positions of the library and the dormitories have been overrun in various years, which wouldn't do people trying to hide a lot of good," Anakin said. "The island's escape routes off the island and even use of phones and internet have been cut off sometimes and there's no real way to know that will happen until it does, which my wife just loves, let me tell you. Unless you just bail out on school the last three weeks of every semester and most of the summer, chances are you're going to get caught in something strange."

He shrugged. "I've been on this island almost ten years. I've done a lot of tactical thinking about this."

Anakin needed other hobbies, but generalling died hard.

"Just because you're going to get caught in something strange shouldn't mean people can't take precautions or that those in charge should just give up and let it happen and damn everyone's safety," Karina replied, frowning harder at him. She was judging you Anakin and finding you wanting.

"I understand it could be hard to get everyone to an evacuation point or a safe haven but that should be the number one priority. Not fighting. Not researching. Getting people to safety comes first. If you have to fight, then send a small strike team or reconnaissance team while the majority of combatants are protecting the people. It's easier and simpler to just let everyone do their own thing but if people get seriously injured or hurt because no one bothered to make sure there were protocols and procedures in place to help protect them... that's even worse. It's negligent of the peoples' safety and that's dead wrong."

"I think my position is on the record. By the way, if anyone wants any sonic grenades for when whatever's going to happen happens, I'm your hookup. And I don't even charge for those services," Mira promised. "I also have a limited number of freeze grenades, too, because it's way too hard to get the components for those on this planet."

Because shooting is fun too! Even if your blaster is totally uncivilized.
