Cultural Exploration [Friday, 2nd Period]

Before class, Clint had sent everyone a message about bringing swim clothes with them, and he was trusting technology to be on his side for once.

"Hey guys," he said, once everyone had made it through the portal. "Since it's getting colder in Fandom, and since a bunch of you asked for this at the beginning of the semester, I figured we'd have a beach day today, so welcome to Fiji, specifically Wailoaloa Beach. I'm sure you've all had a long week, and even if you haven't, pretend you have and take some time to relax and go for a swim, okay?"

Alec so wasn't in the mood for beachy fun. He was looking pretty sullen as he sat along the water, scowling at the sand like it offended him.

Yeul paused by Alec, halting her walk to offer him a smile.

"Is the sand that terrible?" she asked lightly.

She guessed it probably wasn't the sand that had left him in a terrible mood but, nontheless, it was a better question than 'are you alright?' when it was clear he wasn't.

"What?"

Tone down the attitude there, Lightwood.

Though it wasn't as if Yeul seemed to mind!

"You were glaring at the sand," she said patiently. "I wondered if it was really so awful."

Alec eyed her, bristling. "Do you always ask people this kind of thing?"

"Sometimes," she admitted, shrugging slightly. "Not always about sand, you understand, but similar things, yes."

Yeul tilted her head slightly. "Do you think that is a problem?"

"Yes," Alec said, more annoyed than surprised by the question. "People who are upset don't usually want to explain why to someone they don't know."

“Perhaps not,” she said agreed. “Though some people would rather answer a stranger than a friend. Without asking, I could hardly know which type you were, right?”

"I'd rather not answer anyone," Alec said, in a tone that heavily suggested that he thought this was very obvious.

It was all he could do to refrain from making a 'run along' gesture at the mundie.

"I suppose not," Yeul said calmly, smiling slightly. "Though even with that, it is rarely a bad thing to know that someone cared enough to ask. And if that irritates you, which it might," since he was terribly touchy, "then at least you are likely to be grumpy with your rude classmate rather than upset about whatever it is that bothers you. That is not a bad thing either, as a distraction."

"Except that nothing was bothering me," Alec pointed out irritably, "so it's not a case of substituting grumpiness for something else."

"How was I to know?" she wondered, still calm. "You were glaring at the sand terribly."

Yeul shrugged slightly.

"I asked because I cared," she said, "I will take my leave and let you return to your... entertainment."

Sand glaring. Well, she supposed it took all types.

Jim's bruises had healed enough that he didn't feel uncomfortable moving around and going into the water. He was still black and blue and sore but it wasn't as bad as it'd been.

And the warm water would only help, he guessed.

For the most part Yeul contented herself by walking along the shoreline, where the water could run over her feet and ankles.

Every now and then, however, she wandered out further into the water for a swim, and so was thoroughly soaked as she walked along, smiling softly.

Mercy was pretty happy to be here and able to swim and sun a little. The warmth was wonderful!

And, if she was a little self-conscious about showing everyone her tattoo, well... she'd get over it.

Rilla was not really comfortable with the amount of skin being shown and she certainly wasn't going to join them, so she sat with an early seafood lunch.

It didn't taste like home, but it was very good anyway.
