Valentine's Day Dance. The Gym. 8.30 pm

The gym was decorated, the DJs were playing, and the punch was not yet spiked.

Fandom High's Valentine's Day Dance had begun.

Zero, clearly not dressed for the occasion in acid-washed jeans and a Dropkick Murphys t-shirt, joins the embittered group. "What's up?" she asked everyone around.

Sam waved. "Oh, thank god, Zero. I thought I was going to be the only person here in pants."

"You almost were. I came within about three seconds of wearin' the kilt."

"What made you change your mind?"

"It was too much like a skirt."

Sam nodded. "And that would be bad? Oh! I forgot. We're blowing stuff up in the Danger Shop on Sunday afternoon if you want to come. For gun club."

"Well, I didn' want to look like I cared." Zero shrugged. "Ooh. Blowing stuff up. Do you have to be on the gun club rolls or whatever t'show up?"

"I don't think so," Sam said, after some thought. "Er, if you're talking to Parker, you can ask her."

Alanna glanced at Zero's outfit with a pang of jealousy. "I should have just worn pants."

"No, no, you look nice!"

Alanna smoothed the dress back in place, yet again. "I wear dresses five times a year. And that's only in the past two or three years. Enjoying the dance?"

"Yeah, it's...it's nice."

Alanna rolled her eyes. "Not enough straight guys in this school. Not that I don't have a boyfriend, just, meh, shutting up now."

"Hey, Zero," Peter said. "Honestly, I think that's the outfit of the night."

Zero scuffed the toe of one combat boot against the gym floor. "Hey, Peter. I try to keep up with the trends, y'know."

"It definitely makes the best statement in this corner," Peter said with a smile. "But now I feel really overdressed."

"Aw. No, you look nice. I'm just...not the dressin' up sort."

"Thank you," Peter said. "For the record, I think you'd look great in a dress, but I fully support your style. Anybody who wears boots to a Valentine's Day dance automatically goes on my list of 'Best People Ever.' Be proud. If I had a cookie at the moment, I'd give it to you."

"Well, I do have a dress. It's just very...pink. Cookie?"

"Hey, Zero." Parker takes a break from dancing, and leans against the wall to catch her breath. "Having fun?"

"Yeah, I guess so." Zero shrugs. "The punch is nice?"

"Spiked or unspiked?" Parker asked, then shook her head. "Come on, next non-schmoop song, we go out and dance. Deal? I can't find Jack in this crush anywhere."

Zero took another cautious sip from her cup. "Pretty sure it's not spiked yet. Or it wasn't when I got this. Deal. Too bad there's no mosh pits at school Valentine's dances." For a moment, something dark and melancholy flickered across Zero's face, then she was back to a fairly good mood.

Parker smiled, then, when the DJ's were on break, went to request a song and came back chortling. "Heh. Right. Good song coming up soon. And? Are you busy Sunday afternoon?"

"Um, isn't that when the Gun Club is blowing things up? Sam invited me to that. That is, if people who aren't officially part of the club can go."
