Valentine's Day Dance. The Gym. 8.30 pm

The gym was decorated, the DJs were playing, and the punch was not yet spiked.

Fandom High's Valentine's Day Dance had begun.

Walter led Pippi out the dance floor and held a hand out to her. This song wasn't hard on the ears. "You look lovely tonight, Pippi." He could tell her that without worry. He hoped.

"Thank you." she said taking his hand.

"You look lovely too."

"Thank you." Walter led her into a slow turn around the dance floor, going carefully on the assumption that she probably wasn't used to getting around in those shoes. "Have you been enjoying yourself tonight?"

Pippi is doing surprisingly well in the shoes considering that, a) nobody has ever seen her in anything but boots, and b) she might be one or more sheets to the wind.

She leans her head in Walter's shoulder.

"S'okay I guess."

"You guess?" Walter was impressed by her steadiness. Must be her sea legs kicking in.

"I was hopin' to see sumone an' dance with him."

"Who?" Walter asked, trying to put his notion of Pippi together with the idea of her with a boy.

Pippi thought about this for a while.

"I dunno... I forget." she said, "But I'duv known 'im if I saw 'im."

"Right. Well, I think any boy who likes girls who didn't look twice at you tonight would be a bit of a fool."

Although she did require a second look dressed normally, too.

"And if you can't remember who he is, I don't think he's worth being glum over, right?"

"Jag har känsel för honom tänka på grund av den öga lapp," she said.

"Den göra honom blick lik en sjörövaren. Sjörövaren ni är het. But you're probably right."

Walter blinked. "Swedish? Does rum always make you speak Swedish?"

"Ja , har något." she said looking at him.

"Entschuldigen Sie, aber ich spreche kein Swedish," Walter said, showing off almost all of his German. "So, can we stick with English?"

"Javol." Says Pippi, putting her head back on his shoulder.

"Walter?"

"Yes?" Walter asked and maneuvered them past another ~~purely nonexistent~~ couple.

"I think ther wus somethin already inna punch we couldn taste."

"Why do you say that?" Walter asked, straightfaced.

"No reason." she said.

"You smell good. Not as good as..." she lifted her hand off his shoulder and waved it around. "...Whoever. But pretty good. When I left Vimmerby I thought I'd be miserable away from Papa and Tommy and Annika and Villa Villekulla. But you guys are so great. I love you guys."

Walter blinked, not that Pippi could see, but he did. It was the booze or whatever was in the punch that wasn't booze, if there was anything like that. And after the research Alfred had made him do, anything seemed possible to Walter.

"We love you, too, Pippi. You're a great friend." Global "we." No commitment. She probably wouldn't even remember in the morning.

Pippi nods with her head still against Walter's shoulder.

Good thing she's not wearing make-up.

"Soooo, wer'd ya get those wire thingys anyway?"

Walter grimaced. "My father. He was a research scientist for the Crown." Ah well, she probably wouldn't remember this tomorrow, either.

"That's nice to have something from your Papa. I have many things from my Papa. Not much from Mama though, 'cept m'hair. N'm eyes, n'pretty much everythin' else 'bout how I looks. Accordin' to Papa that is."

Walter looked up, relieved as the song drew to a close. "Thank you for the dance, Pippi. It wouldn't be a proper dance here if I didn't have one with you." He gave her a bow and a smile.

Pippi grinned a slightly lopsided grin and bobbed a curtsy.

"No, it wouldn't be would it?"

She walked with him back to the others, steady on her feet but listing slightly to port.

"Mebbe next time, I'll check the lable on the rum more careful..."
