Library, Wednesday

Once again, Sholeh was a girl on a mission. Mr. Constantine had given her an assignment (with the promise to teach her how to order books for the library!!!) to find out where their science books were deficient so they could order more.

The only trouble? Sholeh didn't know enough about science to be a good judge of that. She could tell that their alchemy section could use some beefing up and the xenobiology section was a little on the thin side, but other than that, she was at a loss.

But she wasn't worried! Having a willingness to improvise and big sister who was great at baking meant that Sholeh already had a plan. That plan involved a sign, a giant platter of cupcakes, and a pen and paper.

Have suggestions for where the library can improve its offerings? Make a suggestion and take a cupcake!

Now to wait for the good ideas to come pouring in!

"Oh, hello Sholeh!" Yeul said, reading the sign as she did so, then asking earnestly, "Is there something wrong with what the library currently offers?"

"Liara's almost done reading the science sections!" Sholeh explained. "That won't do at all! So I told Mr. Constantine and he said that I should find out what we needed and then he'd teach me to order books!"

She couldn't help but beam as she said that. Did she sound like she was bragging? Cause she kinda was.

But it was very innocuous bragging, all things considered...

"Will he?" Yeul asked, smiling. "Congratulations then. You seem very excited about it. Do you have quite a long list of books so far?"

"I do, but most of them aren't science," Sholeh said. "I don't really know enough about the sciences to know what we're missing. I should probably call Liara and ask if there are any books she'd especially like."

Sholeh picked two cupcakes from the platter and offered on to Yeul. They were best friends now, Yeul didn't have to make a suggestion to get cupcakes.

"How've you been? I don't think I got a chance to really thank you for the trip. Zeela's been so happy since then."

“Thank you,” she said, taking a cupcake with a smile and resolving to make a suggestion before she left. “Did Zhari make them? Or did you?”

She just wanted to make sure she thanked the right sister for making them!

“I’m glad Zeela’s been happy.” Though she wished that it hadn’t gone… quite… so poorly for Sholeh. Still, reminding her of that seemed like a poor idea, so Yeul didn’t. “I think Zeela will also be happy to know that Caius is coming for Parents’ Weekend. He wants to follow up with her. Of course, he’ll be happy to see you and Zhari as well.”

But Zeela had been his favourite of the sisters.

"Zhari did," Sholeh said. Inside, Zhari was smiling that the question had been asked. "She does all the cooking, cause she's the best at it. And likes it most. I can kinda be forgetful and Zee doesn't have the patience."

=Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!=

Sholeh winced a bit. "Zeela also says that she's very excited to see Caius, by the way." "I mean, we all are."

But he was Zee's favorite, too.

"We all had fun, too. I didn't mean to make it sound like only Zeela did. I know Zhahar would love to go back to that city with all the books and shops and things. I would, too."

And Zee wanted to return and kill more monsters. But that went without saying.

“I’ll have to thank Zhari,” Yeul said, because potential squirrels made it a bad idea to thank her then, when Sholeh was the one out. “If you see her first, please thank her for me.”

She shook her head. “It did not sound like Zeela was the only one that enjoyed the trip,” Yeul said gently. “And I am sure another trip could be arranged for any purpose, if you or your sisters would like to visit again at some point.”

"We would," Sholeh assured her, even if she planned to avoid all chocobos, all the time. "I know Zeela would go back anytime it's convenient. So, just let us know whenever you're planning to return, if you'd like company, and we'll be happy to join you."

But, seriously, no chocobos. Or dead villages.

Would she avoid even the baby chocobos? Chicobos were extremely adorable!

"I'll remember," Yeul promised. "You never did get a swimming lesson! We could do that in New Bodhum."

And Zeela could practice killing monsters on ones that she'd be able to beat later, under Caius' supervision!

Well, odds were pretty good that she wouldn't be expected to ride any of them, so...sure!

Also, she was a sucker for cute.

"That would be fun," she agreed. "The three of us should learn, just to be safe." Beat. "Are there ocean monsters that Zee can hunt? Otherwise, she'll probably gripe about wasting time being in view."

=I'm not that bad!= Zeela protested. =Besides, I bet Caius would teach me. Aww yeah...=

Sholeh was not going to relay that, thank you.

Cecil was getting a bit more confident about being in the library, but he still sort of snuck in warily. And he was very, very careful to be quiet!

"Sholeh!" he whispered, with a huge grin on his face. He had a towel bundled up in his arms and opened it just a bit to show her...a ball of fuzz with huge eyes. "Isn't it adorable??"

At the moment, all she could see was giant eyes and fluff. "It is!" she squealed, reaching out a hand to pet the...whatever it was.

"...What is it?"

"Adorable?" Cecil grinned and shrugged as the fuzzball stretched its neck into Sholeh's petting. "The shelter called it a mystery pet. I think it's some sort of bird?"

Oh, look how cute! You really wanted him to keep it, didn't you? It would be hard to say if the bird's eyes or Cecil's were bigger.

Look! It liked her! Sholeh's heart was melting already.

"It's really big for a baby," she said, gently rubbing the feathers. And, all right, cooing. She was cooing. "Are you caring for it for the day, or...?"

"Adopting it? I hope?" Big, big eyes there, Sholeh. "It needs a good home."

"Aww, that's sweet of you!" Sholeh said, getting a cupcake and crumbling off a little bit of the cake bit for it to try. "It's always nice to try to give things a home."

*Sholeh...* Zhahar sounded exasperated. *He's fishing around to find out if you'll let him keep it. Because you're roommates.*

"Oh!" she said aloud. "Are you asking me for permission?"

"Please?" Cecil asked. "It shouldn't be much trouble." The bird-thing pecked lightly at Sholeh's fingers to taste the cake, then made an adorable little croaking squeak and finished the piece.

"Awww, of course I don't mind!" Sholeh squealed, because who could say no to that little noise?

::Uhh, I don't right?::

=Little late, dontcha think?= Zeela asked. =But, sure. It's weird looking, but it's not actively creepy. I don't care.=

*I'm not cleaning up after it, though,* Zhahar vowed. *And if it ruins my stuff, he's paying for it.*

"I think having a pet is a brilliant idea," Sholeh told Cecil a little more firmly. "But...could we try to keep it away from our clothes and stuff?"

"Oh, of course!" Cecil nodded firmly. "And I'll have to litter-train it or something, I'm sure." You could do that with birds, right? He scritched its neck and cooed a bit more. "I'm thinking of naming him Foucault."

"After the Discipline and Punish writer?" Sholeh asked. She'd tried to read it once for philosophy, but had found it very dense. And a little disturbing.

There was a lot about torture in it, for one.

"Erm...I don't think so?" Cecil scrunched up his face. "The one with the pendulum. It was his birthday when I saw this little guy."

"A pendulum?" Sholeh was all kinds of confused. "He invented a clock?"

"I don't think so." Cecil thought about it. "It's something about showing how the Earth moves, I think?" He grinned. "You hold him, and I'll look it up on my phone. Hey!" He perked up. "Maybe it could be something to get a science book for!"

"Yes!" Sholeh said happily. "Your boyfriend's a scientist, right? Maybe he can suggest a lot of books, too!"

She held out her arms for the little critter, happy to get a chance to cuddle with it while Cecil searched.

"Oh, yes!" Cecil handed Foucault to her gently and googled the physicist. Maybe he'd have to write ♥Carlos♥ again. "He had a pendulum and it showed how the Earth's rotation affects...things." Something like that. Cecil wasn't the scientist.

"Hey there little guy," Sholeh said, wrinkling her nose at the bird. "Hi there, Foucault. How are you?"

It would have ended in peace and ease, if Foucault hadn't started wiggling. Sholeh figured it might want to get down and explore on its own a bit, so she set it on the counter.

And that was when Zeela spotted its legs.

=AHHH! WHAT IS THAT THING?!? KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!=

Cecil grinned as Foucault took a couple shaky steps. "Hello, there, cutie." He kissed the top of the bird's head and stroked its neck, which it seemed to like.

"It...it..." Okay, yeah, even Sholeh was thrown by the...creature's...leg...things. "Are it's legs supposed to look like that?"

=Mother's tits, that thing cannot live in our room! Look at it! It's EVIL!=

::But I already said yes!:: Sholeh protested. ::And he's cute if you ignore the ugly!::

=And I'm sure it's very nice if you ignore the part where it probably stomples babies with its creepy, creepy legs!=

"Oh, yes!" Cecil tickled one of its funny-looking black feet. "All of them looked like that. So big for such a tiny thing, aren't they? I imagine he'll grow into them."

"They look, uhh, backwards," Sholeh supplied. "The knees are supposed to be jointed that way?"

"Oh, yes." Cecil nodded. "I sent a picture to ♥Carlos♥, and he said he looks a lot like a flamingo, except for the bigger eyes, and their legs do that, too."

He'd also said if he ate like a flamingo it would be shrimp and stuff, and not blood sacrifices, which would hopefully be a lot less messy.

Good, because Sholeh would not enjoy picking her way around the remains of soft meat crowns that SOMEONE was too picky to eat all of.

"It, uhh, looks kind of unsettling now," she said delicately.

Zeela, meanwhile, was on minute three of a rant about how the thing was probably going to murder them all in their bed.

There were those huge Cecil eyes again. "What do you mean?" He held his hands protectively around Foucault as if to shelter his ears from hearing. If he'd had visible ears.

Oh no! Sholeh hadn't meant to hurt the little guy's feelings!

"I just meant that he has a lot to grow into!" she said quickly. "He's got a lot to do if he wants to grow up big and strong!"

Good save!

Cecil rubbed Foucault's head and smiled. "I guess he does have a way to go yet. But don't worry, I'm sure he'll get there!"

Who can have as many cupcakes as he wants.

John miiiiiight keep stealing cupcakes all day. Because he was a guy, and there were baked goods. It's not like he had a mum around to make him cupcakes or cookies or crap like that.

Now I want cupcakes. Dammit, RP!
