Breaking Things 101, Wednesday, Period 3

"Today, we are smashing watermelons!"

Electroclash just wasn't going to greet the students like a normal person anymore. They were in the Danger Shop, once again, and there were tables with watermelons on them, and... piles and piles of rubber bands. Yes. Oh, and cameras set up to record each table's goings-on. She should probably say something about that, right?

"Watermelons are hard on the outside but squishy on the inside, and while it's pretty bloody satisfying to just smash them to pieces with a hammer or some shit like that, we are going the slow route today. You are going to pair up, take a watermelon, and start putting the rubber bands around it. It'll seem pointless fr a while, like all things in life, but if you keep putting more and more rubber bands around the fruit, there'll be more and more pressure on it, and eventually it will explode all over you."

Which Electroclash thought would be hilarious all on its own, but she gestured towards the cameras. "And at the end of the class, we'll watch your fruit explosions in glorious slow motion with the help of these high speed cameras. Trust me, it makes it all worth it because it is fucking hilarious. Now, get to pairing up and slowly breaking things."

"I guess that sounds reasonable." Raven picked up a rubber band, giving it a few test stretches. "Do you want to start, or shall I?"

Never let it be said that Sparkle wasn't enthusiastic. He grinned, grabbed a rubber band, and stretched it around the watermelon, letting go of it and smiling a little wider as it settled around the fruit with an audible snap.

"Bet we could probably each get a few of these things on here at a time, if we really wanted."

"Sounds good to me." Raven picked up a few more rubber bands, stretching them around her fingers a little before snapping them in place around the watermelon.

It didn't look explodey, yet.

It probably had a long way to go before it would look explodey. Sparkle mostly hoped that they didn't end up being snapped at by fifty flying rubber bands of doom once it finally came to that.

He grabbed a few more, something just shy of a handful, and struggled a bit before getting those ones in place, too.

"... So, how many hundreds of these things do you figure it'll take?"

Being attacked by rubber bands hadn't even occurred to Raven.

"Several," Raven said, resisting the temptation to make her hands larger so she could wrap more than four or five of the rubber bands over the watermelon at once. "I'm still not convinced it'll work at all."

Sparkle tended to think about things like that. Issues. He had issues.

"Yeah, no, but... I mean, you put enough pressure on something, sooner or later it's gotta give, right? So, we keep squeezing it, eventually it'll just buckle, and like a million rubber bands will rip through it like... like rubber band chainsaw links or something."

If you could come up with a better simile, go right ahead.

"I guess," Raven said. She didn't spend a lot of time thinking about physics, really. "Assuming the rubberbands don't just all break off."

"God, that would suck," Sparkle decided, wrinkling his nose. "Elastics flying everywhere and no watermelon explosion? Where's the fun in that?"

He clearly wasn't too concerned about that being a possibility, considering the handful of rubber bands he was stretching around the watermelon this time.

"It would admittedly still be breaking things," Raven noted, picking up another assortment of rubberbands to add to the watermelon. "But probably not as much fun to watch a movie of."

"Just us," Sparkle agreed, taking another handful as he waited for his turn at the melon, "being attacked by elastics. Way not fun. Those things leave welts."

Raven winced at the idea, even as she snapped the rubber bands into place. "I admit, I've never been hit with these things before."

"You so don't want to change that," Sparkle shared, even as he stretched one of the elastics around his fingers, thumb up and index finger pointed at the far wall, aiming his hand like a gun. "I mean, I could indoctrinate you into the cult of 'ow that fucking hurts what did you do that for,' but I'm sure you'd appreciate me not, huh?"

"Very much so," Raven said. "I'd hate to have to think about getting revenge."

"Really? I thought girls ate that kind of thing up with a spoon," Sparkle mused. "All the ones I ever knew, anyhow. Used to live with one in Toronto who hated everyone, but especially squealers. Took this one kid, once, and dragged him to the middle of the city in the middle of winter and took his coat and shoes and all his money, told him to try to find his way back, and if he squealed on them again, if he even dared to call for help, he'd get it good. Almost lost his feet."

Sparkle was probably making this up. He tended to do that.

"That's horrible," Raven said. She would be way more creative about revenge than something like that. "What was he squealing about?"

"I don't know," Sparkle replied with an easy shrug. "Probably she was out stealing things again. Or she beat someone up. She does that a lot. Lewis hates that."

Well. That much was true.

Sparkle put a few more rubber bands on the watermelon.

"Did she have a good reason?" Raven asked. "For the stealing and beating people up. Because if it was for no reason, then that's terrible, but sometimes those are just things you have to do."

"Yeah. No. I don't know. She was bored?" Sparkle didn't seem terribly concerned about her motives either way. "I'm not going to hang out with the kind of person who, like, throws people into the tiger pen at the zoo when they piss her off. I like being, you know, whole. It's a hobby of mine."

Along with trying to explode watermelons. As of, like, right then.

"Anyhow, some people don't need to steal but they keep doing it anyhow so they don't get rusty or something. Never know when you'll need to again, you know."

Raven blinked, fingers full of rubberbands stretched to various lengths. "I hadn't thought of that." Look, she'd gone from street kid to pampered rich girl at around the age of seven. She'd still been reveling in 'I don't have to break into mansions to feed myself' before coming to Fandom. "I hope I haven't lost my touch."

"It'd be a crappy touch to lose," Sparkle noted, nodding. "I mean, not that I'm supposed to be encouraging it or anything, but... you know... you have a useful talent, you don't let it rot, right?"

Sparks was going to encourage, and he was going to do so shamelessly.

He had a point.

"It'd be a little hard in such a small town," Raven mused. "You wouldn't want to get reputation for it."

That way, in her experience, sometimes led to angry mobs.

"What can I say? I don't like to stagnate. Things get boring fast that way."

He slipped another dozen rubber bands around the watermelon, wrinkling his nose. This really was taking a while, here.

Raven started stretching another set, getting it ready to wrap around the watermelon, then paused. "It looks like it's starting to leak a little."

That had to be a good sign, right?
