Library, Sunday All Day

Today, Evan walked into the library to find a cuddlepile of books in the children's section. From somewhere, they'd managed to find a teddy-bear, and the whole lot of the kids' books were just sort of heaped up around it, doing what Evan could only assume was dozing off.

... Which didn't seem like a half-bad idea, but there was work to be done. Evan would just have to cuddle his puppy after his shift or something, instead.

He did put up a sign near the children's books asking people to be extra quiet when passing by them, though. He didn't want anybody disturbing their naptime.

"A specific reason," he admitted, leaning back against the desk with a little shrug of his shoulders. "I'm trying to learn as much as I can about where I came from, and information like that isn't going to just be sitting on the shelves in the open part of the library. I... think maybe if I learn enough about who he was, it'll be a good start when I try to become more like the person I want to be, if that makes sense."

"It does," she said, nodding. "And knowing more will give you... not peace but a foundation to work from. Certainty, perhaps?"

"Certainty would be nice," Evan agreed with a little nod of his head. "I feel like I haven't had much of that since I left home. I thought I did, I thought I at least knew who I was at first, and I was wrong about even that."

So, really, certainty would be pretty awesome.

"About your origins, you were wrong," she said agreeably. "But I would not say you were wrong about yourself entirely."

"Maybe not," Evan allowed. "But I've been wrong enough to find myself surprised. I mean, caught off-guard by things I catch myself doing. Things I never thought I would do."

In fairness, he'd never been given cause to believe such things were possible. It was difficult to fly into a berserker rage in a utopian virtual reality sim.

"People discover new things about themselves when put under pressure," she said, smiling slightly at him. "You just... discovered more than most."

"I found out that I can do some really, really horrible things when I get upset," he murmured in reply. "And that I have the power for it. It's a scary combination, especially since I don't want to hurt anyone."

At least most of the people he'd hurt in his rages had really, really had it coming to them.

Er. Except that one alien bouncer who had badmouthed Kansas that one time.

"Of course you don't," she said, nodding. "You are not the sort to take pleasure in the pain of other people."

Yeul hadn't really meant to bring Evan's mood down but since it was clear that this conversation... was rather gloomy she figured that she might as well let him know.

"Caius has asked about you," she added. "He wants to know how you have been."

Which was far more ominous than Yeul wanting to know the same, it should be said.

Yeah, Evan didn't think for an instant that Caius was inquiring after his mood.

"I've been reading books about meditation, and taking an anger management class through the school," he offered, because if nothing else it was a reply that would show that he'd been trying. "It's easy to be okay around here, otherwise. I mean, unless the really bad stuff happens, which it hasn't, this island is actually usually pretty relaxing."

It was more like home than the Jean Grey School, at least.

“It is a fairly quiet place,” Yeul agreed. “And generally peaceful.”

Though Yeul wandered through invasions and didn’t think they were terribly non-peaceful, so…

“I will tell him what you have told me but I expect he will come to see for himself at some point.”

"For himself?" Evan was torn somewhere between enthusiasm and panic at that, go figure. "For Parents Weekend, you mean? That's coming up soon..."

And it wasn't like Evan had anyone who would come, right?

She nodded. See, Evan? Someone was coming for you!

“For Parents Weekend,” Yeul agreed. “He wants to see Zeela too.”

And her, of course, but that went without saying.

"Zeela, too?" Evan pursed his lips a little. He hadn't really spoken with Zee himself since... that thing that happened. Now he was half worried about running into her again, around Caius.

... Which was ridiculous, considering how she shared a body with his girlfriend and all. He was aware of that.

"Is he training her as well?"

"Yes," she said, to both questions. "He is teaching her to fight properly, not just with bravery and nerve."

"Bravery and nerve can get a person a long way," Evan noted, though he was nodding a little. "But against some of the things we run into, even here... Not to mention..."

Not to mention the monsters in Yeul's world...

"... I'm glad she's learning to fight."

"I think she enjoys it," Yeul said, smiling. "Caius likes that about her."

She was scrappy!

"That she likes to fight?" There was a moment's pause while Evan pursed his lips, and then hopped up to sit on his desk. "I mean, I respect her for that. That she steps up to protect her sisters the way she does."

He just kind of still thought Zeela was a bit of a bully.

Yeul tilted her head slightly.

"You do not like her?"

"I think the feeling's kind of mutual," Evan admitted with a shrug. "But she's got way more legitimate reasons for not liking me, by now. When we first met, she was kind of... of mean."

He wrinkled his nose, and then shook his head.

"It doesn't matter. I mean, she thought she was being funny, I guess. She kept talking about Sholeh and making a lot of kind of... sexual jokes, and it was one of those weeks with all of the pollen and..." He sighed. "It was awkward and uncomfortable, but it didn't hurt anything. Nothing like what I did, losing my head and almost letting Sholeh get killed."
