Science You Cannot Possibly Comprehend, Monday, Period 5

"I hope last week taught you all that I spoke the truth from the beginning of this class," Doom said as the class began. He was standing in front of a large metal ring at the front of the lab. "The concepts in this class shall be difficult. The actual creation of devices will require explanation and to build any of the inventions we discuss from scratch will not be possible in the remainder of class. I have no interest in giving you busy work, so you will not receive assignments or assistance to continue any of these inventions outside of class."

"Should you choose to further experiment outside of class, that is your decision. It is your initiative to take. If you can complete a device on your own time, it is possible that you may impress Doom, but it will not affect your grade," Doom explained. "And now that I have been forced to explain this in simple terms due to the difficulties certain students had in grasping the concept, you have lost precious minutes to complete your build during the second half of class. You may thank Victor Mancha for this disruption."

"Also, no more food orders during class, Cecil Baldwin. Anyone who orders food in this class will be assigned detention. No further warnings will be issued."

"With that out of the way, I wish to follow up on last week's discussion of travel through time with talk of travel through space. Or, to be more accurate, interdimensional travel. When I was a youth, that was what first brought me to this country. Your military brought me to America to invent for them during the Cold War. In secret, I began work on a device that could transport me into the Hell realm of a devil some of you may know as Mephisto," Doom explained, pure hatred in his voice. "I had unsettled business with the demon. A rival's interference led to the failure of the device, but for a brief moment, I crossed between universes. It was the first time anyone in my world had done so via a mechanical device."

"Today in Fandom, interdimensional travel is obviously commonplace. You can achieve it through magical means simply by crossing the causeway. If you prefer to use an unreliable service, you may order a portal from Portalocity. I prefer something I can control," Doom said. Because of course he did. "Reed Richards created a device he called The Bridge, which could transport beings to a place outside of space and time. This device is based on that design."

And that's when Doom launched into the detailed explanation of wormholes, tears in space, the fabric of dimensions, dimensional harmonics, and so on, and so forth. After twenty minutes, he had delivered a relatively succinct explanation of how it was possible for a metal ring to allow you to go from one dimension to another. Hopefully you were able to follow along, because he did not stop for questions.

Doom touched his gauntlet, where he had hidden the only control panel for this specific Bridge portal. A shimmering yellow light appeared within the ring. "As a class, we shall now travel through this portal to a private lab I have built. There, you will have the opportunity to work."

"I imagine they're very good for morale!" Well, they cheered Cecil up. She was sort of like their own little glow cloud. Only without the mind controlling and raining dead animals, and a bit more personable.

Yeah, Karolina wouldn't be raining dead animals on anyone anytime soon. As an animal rights supporter that would have been very out of character.

"Sometimes?" she offered. "But they can make being inconspicuous a little hard."

"Why would you want to be inconspicuous?" Cecil asked curiously.

"Because..."

A glance in Doom's general direction, and she lowered her voice.

"Sometimes I fight bad guys."

"Oh! I suppose it's hard to be sneaky that way." Cecil wasn't terribly into sneakiness, but he could sympathize.

Karolina confirmed this with a nod. "But, I can be sneaky if I'm, you know... Looking normal."

Normal, human, whatever. What did 'normal' even mean, anyway?

Cecil was very possibly the exact wrong person to ask about that.

"Unless you were someplace where glowy colors were normal, I suppose."
solarhippie: ([lsd] A multicolor heart.)

Fun fact, Karolina had been somewhere like that! Recently, even. But then some antimatter missiles happened, and now she had no idea whether there was anything left of Majesdane anymore.

Than might have explained her less than enthusiastic "Mm." And then a swift change of subject. "So, do you happen to know anything about, um, building portals?"

Cecil shrugged. He barely even noticed the change of subject, because this was Cecil. "I've been through one once?" he offered.
solarhippie: ([lsd] Sheepishly.)

"I've been through several," Karolina replied, wryly. "I guess I need to start paying more attention."
