Raleigh was in front of the class today with Max, but Herc was nowhere in sight.

"There was a last minute thing back home that Mr. Hansen had to do," Raleigh said. It was PPDC business, not that Raleigh had been told, though. "Which means we're on our own for class today. We're going to go over the basics of self defense that everyone can use."

There was even a fun hand out for everyone to look over! Check that out!

"Step one is to be aware of your surroundings," Raleigh said. "Is the area not so great? You're probably going to want to be more vigilant then. Step two is being loud when someone comes after you. Shout stuff."

Like encouragement. Maybe your next attack. You know. Normal stuff.

"And three, go for the weak spots on the body. Nose, eyes, throat, groin--" That one got a wince. "--knees and shins. If someone is attacking you, you can't be afraid to do them enough damage to get to safety."

He smiled brightly. "Okay, how about you guys pair off and go over a few moves on the worksheet?"

Alana sat down on the mats to stretch and glance over the worksheet. She was ready to spar with whoever came at her.

She'd even try not to knee them in the groin.

Mordin glanced over the worksheet briefly and approached the familiar face. "Hello. Believe we are in Space with Professor Alenko together as well. Mordin. Would like to practice, if you choose."

"Yep, pretty sure we are," Alana agreed with a quick smile. "My name's Alana. And I'm ready to spar if you are."

She glanced him over, trying to assess how tough a fight this might be. She'd done some self-defense lessons back on Landfall, but that wasn't the same thing as being a serious fighter.

Mordin was fairly confident of his ability to defend himself against a salarian--he could read the body language to anticipate their moves, and all of his admittedly limited training so far had been with and against salarian opponents.

Practicing with Alana was an exciting new challenge.

He looked over the worksheet a little closer and mentally crossed off the things that would not apply to him--leveraging his weight being an example. Even Alana, who was not the largest in the class, probably weighed more than him.

"Breaking holds seems...most useful." Even though Mordin knew he had an advantage, his cartilaginous skeleton giving him invaluable flexibility.

"Good idea," Alana agreed. She wasn't especially muscular, but she still suspected she could break Mordin. "If you can get away, you don't need the rest of it. Well, if you're lucky, anyhow."

If you weren't lucky, you'd be dead before any amount of self-defense training could make a difference. But Alana wasn't thinking too far down that path right then.

She held up her arms. "Want to grab me first?"

"Certainly." Mordin placed the worksheet on the floor and reached out towards Alana, grabbing at her wrist.
