Library, Wednesday

Sholeh came in with a mission today. It was a new semester, with new students and teachers and at least one person seemed to be afraid of libraries and librarians. That wouldn't do at all! Libraries were magic places full of wonder and delight, not fear!

Today, she was brainstorming plans to get people involved with the library more. Maybe a book club? Tours? Homework help?

She also had a platter of cookies on the circulation desk with a small sign that read, Welcome to the library! Have a cookie! First-timers? Have two! Some of the children's books kept trying to steal the cookies when her back was turned, but she was old hand at listening for the soft, whispery noises that meant the books were up to something.

Cecil really wasn't sure about this, but he'd sort of kept a surreptitious eye on Sholeh, and she didn't seem inclined to disemboweling. And he was a journalist! He had to get to the bottom of this and find out if everything she'd said was true, right?

He packed his gun and tear gas in his backpack, just in case. You could never be underprepared around a library.

He stuck his head in carefully and eyed the cookies with a little suspicion and a little drool. "Did you make those?"

He was indeed that type. He smiled a little nervously and bravely stepped in to get a cookie - they had been awfully good. He sort of sidled over to Sholeh carefully as he nibbled on it, keeping an eye out for the books and any other librarians - maybe she was nice but an anomaly?

"So you...um. You come here a lot?"

Now that made sense! Except for the whole "library" part, which was still a bit odd, but... "Like me and radio! I was really thrilled when I got to be an intern at NVCR. That was pretty deadly, too, but I just knew I'd make it through and be a host some day, because I loved it so much."

Cecil thought about it. He thought hard. There was...well, no. Or maybe...hm.

"I don't think the lights above the Arby's have killed anyone?" he finally answered dubiously. "Not technically, anyway. Unless the traffic accidents due to distractions count."

"Oh, not regular lights. The Arby's has mysterious alien lights hovering above it. They think we don't know." He rolled his eyes. "I haven't seen any like them here yet. Unless they only show up sometimes?"

"True." Cecil nodded. "Past performance is not a predictor of future results."

Cecil blinked. That...was actually a pretty good point! He looked around the library, which was being decidedly non-deadly at the moment.

"If you're sure..." He snatched up another cookie before the books could get it and grinned a bit nervously at Sholeh.

"Some of them are kind of cute," Cecil allowed. One of them nudged his hand, and he switched the cookie to the other. "Mine."
