Hand-to-Hand Combat & Self Defense, Tuesday, Period 4

The students should have received a note asking them to meet in the gym, where they would find a tall, scruffy ginger Australian with a military bearing and one arm in a sling. Next to him sat a happy-looking, slightly overweight brown and white bulldog. "Right, listen up," Herc said to his students in a carrying sort of voice. "I'm Hercules Hansen, that's Mister Hansen to you lot, and this is Hand-to-Hand Combat and Self Defense. If you're in the wrong room, that's impressive, because there aren't any other classes on right now by my schedule, but no harm done. I'm just gonna tell you up front, I'm new to this teaching business, but if you think that means you're gonna get one over on me, think again.

"This is Max," he said, indicating the dog at his feet, "Max has run of the classroom, but please do not disrupt class by calling him over or playing with him. I want you paying attention to me, not my s--" he hesitated for a moment, his jaw tightening a little, then said firmly, "Not to my dog. Don't worry, he knows better than to get underfoot while you're working. You may pet Max before or after class, or if he happens to wander over to you during class, as long as you're still paying attention. Anyone caught giving Max treats will be reminded to be sneakier in the future. Any questions?"

He paused for a moment, then bulled right on. "No? Good. I think the name of the class gives you a pretty good idea of what it's about, so let's get started. I want your names, so I know who's who, I want to know what your experience level is, and...one interesting fact about you." Maybe it would help him remember their names. "In the future if you could show up in workout clothes and try to get warmed up before class starts, that would be great, but we're not gonna do much today so you should be fine. I obviously can't demonstrate some things for the next few weeks," he added, glancing down at his injured arm, "so if someone would like to volunteer to demonstrate, I would appreciate that. See me after class. We can make you a teaching assistant. Otherwise I'll pick someone at random at the beginning of class. Right, let's get started."

Max was happy to oblige by wandering over into petting range. She wanted to pet him, right? He was a good dog, he promised. Clearly deserving of pets.

"Korra, I've mastered three of the four elements." Which would be more impressive if Herc actually knew what that meant. "And I'm getting better at airbending,...and I have a polar bear dog?"

"My name is Raleigh and I'm a freshmen," he said, grinning down at the dog. Because who didn't love having a random bulldog in the classroom? "And... I don't know. I'm from Alaska?"

Look, it was possibly the only cool thing he could come up with about himself.

"I'm Zee," she replied, holding her hand out for Max to sniff if he wanted. She wasn't going to mention that she probably wasn't on his roster; maybe he wouldn't notice. "I've gotten into fights growing up and I've taken a few classes, but I'm still not good enough."

As the past week had demonstrated.

"And last week I got into a fight with a disembodied stone arm and that was one he..ck of a hard fight." Yeah, heck hadn't been the first word that had come to mind.

"Hi, I'm Alana," Alana said, once she'd torn her attention away from the dog. "I'm a sophomore, I've done a little training in sparring at home but not that much, and ... I have wings but I don't really fly."

Alex wasn't so much a pet person, but even she thought the dog was adorable, and attempted to pet him before introducing herself. "Hey, I'm Alex and I'm a junior. I've been trained mostly in Krav Maga, though not much more than sparring. And I can speak fluent Russian."

She didn't mention the part about it actually being her first language.

"Hey, ya'all," Danny lifted a hand, grinning and barely managing to not bounce on the tips of his toes, "I'm Danny, Danny Vasquez, and I'm one of the Bravest Warriors. That means I've got hecka experience fighting all sorts of weird things, but it's mostly done inside space suits or with my dog, who can turn into a gun or a sword. I don't get to punch stuff nearly as much as I'd like, so the more experience, the better."

"And one interesting thing, huh?" Because having a dog that could turn into a sword or a gun clearly didn't count. "Man, that's tough, hard to pick just one, right? Well, how about this? I can play banjo with my feet. Pretty swank, right?"

"I'm Billy Kaplan and I'm... well, better at fighting than I was when I got here," he said. "I'm a magic user, which is my interesting fact I guess, but I'm trying to make sure I can defend myself if my spells ever stop working. Which they do a lot around here." Stupid island.

"Hi, I'm Jessica Drew. I've had a good amount of self defense training, and I live in a crazy world that has disasters and crime out the wazoo, so I've gotten to use that training," Jessica said. "The disasters and the crime and the wazoo count as my interesting thing, too. It's doing double duty."

ALL OF MAVIS'S CLASSES HAD PUPPIES THIS WEEK. How was she supposed to learn anything? Huh?

Scratching a bulldog behind the ear was a completely legitimate reason for not immediately realizing it was her turn, right?

"Oh, um. Sorry! I'm Mavis." She glanced down at her high-tops, a little embarrassed to have to add, "I don't really know how to fight at all; my Dad believes in the ancient defensive art of staying locked in a castle until you're five thousand and having a father who threatens to eat anybody who looks at you funny." Which could be an interesting fact, she supposed, for somebody not her, but... "But in a pinch I can turn into a bat and fly away?"

After the strange classes she'd found herself in over the past summer, Snow was glad to have a class that would surely be very useful. "I'm Snow White," she said, "and I don't know a lot about fighting. Yet. I want to learn so I can fight for my kingdom."

"Mordin Solus. Experience limited. Given small training in preparation for encounter with alien species." Mordin tried hard to think of a fact more interesting than being an extraterrestrial visitor. "Can hold breath underwater for up to twenty minutes."
