Science You Cannot Possibly Comprehend, Monday, Period 5

With the name of the class and all, it probably shouldn't be that big a shock that the teacher was a bit full of himself.

But really, there was no way to expect there would be a throne at the front of the room in which a guy in armor was holding what could only be described as a pimp chalice. He wasn't even drinking from it. You'd think he would need a straw to drink anyway, but he definitely didn't have that.

"It is time for the introduction," Doom said. "I AM DOCTOR DOOM. You may address me as 'Doctor.' You WILL address me with the respect deserved the monarch of Latveria. And you MUST acknowledge me as your superior, whether you'd like to or not."

"I possess the greatest scientific mind in my world," Doom stated. "Dimensional travel. Time travel. Advanced robotics. These are things I mastered before ALL OTHERS in my world. And the greatness of Doom stretches to this very island, when as a youth, Doom played the hero, thwarting the plans of the so-called Weeping Angels by inventing a machine to transport time-lost Fandomites back to their present using nothing but Victorian technology, a local assistant, and an intellect well ahead of its time even in the present."

"Over the next several weeks, you will learn scientific truths that you shall only begin to comprehend. I will demean myself by attempting to speak at your level. Attempt to keep up and you will learn much. In time, you may even come to understand it."

"For the rest of this class period, speak amongst yourselves. Give introductions if you must. But know this. If you wish for Doom to know your name, you will have to PROVE that you are worth remembering. You will receive your first opportunity next week."

Well, now you know who Doom is. And he seems not to care if you pass notes, but dare you try it? DARE YOU?

Karolina was kind of openly staring. Well, she was trying not to. But she was still doing it.

She should've taken a closer look at her list of classes when it had been handed to her.

Cecil was a little disappointed not to be learning Science yet, but he supposed introductions were nice, too.

He turned to the girl next to him. "Hi! I'm Cecil."

Karolina took a second to realize she'd been spoken to. It was kind of hard for her to focus on anything but Doctor Doom being in front of the classroom.

But after a second, she did manage it. Even if her smile was brief and distracted. "Oh. Hi. I'm Karolina."

"Do you know very much Science already?" You could probably hear the awe and the capital letter in that.

She could! Kind of. And it was a little disturbing to her, although that was hardly Cecil's fault. She knew not everyone came from ~~Marvel~~ the same world as her.

"Um, not really?"

Not everybody had Reed Richards as a shining example of How Not to Science.

"Oh, good." Cecil heaved a sigh of relief. "I was starting to worry this might be too advanced."

"It... still might be," Karolina hazarded. She bit on her lip and lowered her voice further. "You, um, you probably don't know who Doctor Doom is, do you?"

"He said he's the monarch of somewhere? I don't think we have his country where I'm from, but I could be wrong." Cecil frowned thoughtfully at the teacher. "I don't recognize him."

"He's kind of well-known where I'm from."

Also a robot version of him had killed the mother of one of her friends, but that wasn't really something you shared with strangers.

Especially within earshot of Doom himself.

"Neat, a celebrity teacher!" Cecil smiled. "Is he really as smart as he says?"

"I guess so?" Karolina replied, although the hesitation was obvious. Still, she wouldn't deny it. "But he's not really a good kind of famous."

"Oh. Why not?" He knew not all scientists could be as marvelous as Carlos, but still.

Don't laugh, Danny. Do not laugh. Don't. Laugh.

One of the key components of survival in adventuring around the universe was to not laugh at guys like this, but did they have to make it so hard? So Danny spent most of Doctor Doom's introduction with tears in his eyes, looking a bit like he was constipated from the effort.

This class was going to be awesome.

"Are you okay?" Cecil asked curiously. This guy looked like he was having some troubles.

Well.

Jim already liked this guy. Attitude and a super awesome ensemble? Yeah, Jim liked him. He'd withhold judgment on if this guy was as good as he sounded but he was psyched for the class.

Victor had taken this class on purpose, but he was starting to wonder if it had been a bad idea. Like, was he going to somehow catch supervillain just by being in a room with Loki and Doom?

He was also occupied by trying to make a list of scientific minds he considered greater than Doom's. It was not an especially long list.

And here was Karolina, trying to catch Victor's eye, all are you seeing what I'm seeing? in the general direction of their teacher.

Which was one way to greet him after getting back on the island, sure.

Victor noticed the glance and raised his eyebrows back at Karolina. He was happy to see her and curious about how the rest of her summer had gone but seriously, this was a weird place for them to meet up.

"So do you think he's going to try to teach us anything, or just tell us how awesome he is?" he asked in a low tone.

"I don't –- Would they hire him if he was going to, you know, be a villain?"

The thing with Fandom was that you never really knew, did you?

"They had Magneto," Victor reminded her. "I dunno. I talked to him during the picnic and he said if he wanted to hurt us he would, so..."

So Victor couldn't exactly be reassuring on the point.

Wow. Just . . . wow.

Raven was used to guys thinking they were the gold-plated shit, but this was some really master class ego, here.

She wasn't going to try to pass notes, but she was going to roll her eyes. Hard.

Chaz was just going to sit there and shut down for a bit while he figured out the best kind of reactions that would end up with him surviving and passing the class.

Billy was caught between being amazed, and being nervous. Seriously, did this school have no vetting process whatsoever?

If you feel the need to explain yourself. Doom does not care who you are at this point, though.

Towards the end of class, Doom announced, "I shall have a TA for this class. I have chosen Loki for this great honor. The rest of you should feel shame that you were not selected.Harness that and use it to motivate yourself for next week."

Loki was very sorry that you should feel shame over this. But not sorry enough to draw attention to it.

Also, he was in a position of authority. So.

This should go well. Approach the throne if you must.

What a cheerful way to start the school year!
