fandomhigh | Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Once again, the front lawn of the school had been set up to welcome the new students and teachers who were--assuming the bus trip went safely--arriving in Fandom for the first time. The goal was to create a friendly atmosphere to ease everyone into Fandom life, so the helpers had arranged the school's blue and gold tables everywhere, along with streamers and just a touch of glitter. Someday, the school would run out of glitter, but it would not be this day. There was also plenty of food to be shared next to the information tables, listing out siblings and teaching buddies and roommates, oh my.

Of course, no welcome picnic was allowed to run truly smoothly and the island, seemingly not wanting to miss out on the festivities, was blessing everyone with flower crowns. But hey, at least it wasn't raining something odd, right?

[OOC: This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic will be in post two in an effort to stop our browsers from dying. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers and townies!]

"That was kind of on my mind," Alana said with a little laugh. "Hey, I'm Alana. What's the deal?"

"Jessica. I'd be your school-appointed big sibling," Jessica said. "And I've never seen these things before today, but weird things happen here sometimes. And by 'sometimes' I mean 'frequently.'"

"Got it," Alana said, in a tone that suggested she didn't get it at all. "So it's magic or something?"

She didn't sound like she entirely trusted that. She didn't really like magic.

"You're here five seconds and you're already catching on," Jessica said. "I like it when this goes so smoothly."

Alana grinned, preening just a bit. "I figured it was either magic or invisible wreath gnomes," she said. "Just as long as it's nice magic and not the type to kill everybody."

"That's much more rare," Jessica said. "Um. It still happens, though. There were these bird vampire things a couple weeks ago, and a tornado full of sharks before that. So, um, be careful."

"A tornado," Alana repeated, "full of sharks."

Yeah, that made no sense.

"I'll ... watch out for that."

"I promise you that anything I say that sounds completely insane will be much more plausible soon enough," Jessica said. "Cross my heart, hope to get hit with a sharknado."

"It's gonna get more insane than sharknados?" Alana wondered skeptically. "I'm still stuck on being the only person from Landfall here."

"Well, not more insane. But within range of that kind of thing. Like I said, it'll make more sense after you've been here for a little bit," Jessica said. "But I'm sorry to admit that I've never heard of Landfall."

Alana smiled wanly. "It's okay. I'm getting used to hearing that. It's the biggest planet in our coalition, though."

"Oh, okay, you're from a different galaxy or something. We have a few people from places like that," Jessica said. "But most of the people you come across will be from some version of Earth. Which is the name of this planet, if you didn't know that yet. I'm guessing somebody mentioned that on the bus, though."

"They did, plus the application said," Alana nodded. "Not that I really know anything about Earth except that it's not home, but I figured change was good."

She turned so Jessica could see part of her back. "Anybody else here with wings, at least?"

"Unless one of the other new kids has them, I think you're unique there," Jessica said. "But there are plenty of people with... how to phrase this... physical attributes that are non-traditional on Earth. I think that should cover it."

"Hey, I always wanted to be unique," Alana said, blinking hard with sudden homesickness. "Yay?"

"If it helps at all, the people here tend to be super friendly," Jessica said, a little worried that she was losing Alana with the hard blinks.

It was dust making Alana blink, and she would stick to that forever.

"Seems like it so far," she smiled. "How's the actual school part? Like ... classes."

"Well, if you're a huge nerd like me, you might be a little disappointed that you don't have as many classes or as much homework as you might want," Jessica suggested. "If you're a rational person, it's not bad. You have classes a few hours a week and you get to pick the classes. And they're usually creative group work things or interesting lectures."

"I like creative," Alana nodded. "I'm not big on the whole ... nerd thing."

"Most people aren't," Jessica said. "So you should be fairly happy with the course selection. Just be warned that pretty much this entire first week will be everyone introducing themselves and where they're from. Real classes will start the following week."
