BWI Airport Portalocity Lounge, Saturday Morning

The glittery enthusiasm of the 'Fandom High' banner strung across the wall was a little unexpected, but at least it confirmed Vider was where she was supposed to be, even if no one else appeared to be here yet. That part wasn't surprising, considering how early her flight had gotten in, but she seemed to be dealing with the earliness of the hour remarkably well. It might have had something to do with the fact that she was getting used to never getting quite enough sleep any more.

One of the trainers at the Hangadrottin War College had shoved a wad of unfamiliar money into her hand this morning, 'for the journey,' like she was going to some foreign country and not just the East coast. Still, she wasn't going to turn down money so she'd taken it without complaint and used some of it to buy a tea and pastry for breakfast, and once she picked out a seat by the wall where she could prop her spear case and sword up, she settled in to eat, picking the pastry apart into little shreds before putting them in her mouth.

So far this boarding school thing didn't seem so bad, although she was reserving final judgment until she'd actually seen the school.

Alana raised her eyebrows right back at him and finally broke the silent-staring thing. "What?" she asked. "Is there something on my face, or something?"

"No, that's the other girl," he said. "I was uh...your back."

"My -- oh," Alana said, tracing a fingertip over a wing. "Guess you don;t get a lot of people from Landfall here, huh?"

Which, personally, she thought was the weird part.

"No, not really," he said. "I think you might be the first."

"A pioneer," Alana said, halfway mocking the notion. "Weird, but whatever. Where are you from?"

"California. Three thousand miles that way," Isaac said, pointing behind him. He had no idea if that was west or not. "Kind of lacking in winged people there. Although we did have a guy who was a lizard once."

"I've heard there are people who look like crocodiles, but I've never met one of 'em," Alana said, almost envious. "The wings are boring, promise. I only think about 'em when they get caught on stuff."

"Sounds like a pain in the ass," he said. And it reminded him of when he got his claws caught on things. "Can you use them to fly?"

"Not that much," Alana said, matter-of-factly. "My folks had me wingbled when I was a baby, and the training to get good at flying after that is so not worth it."

She wasn't bitter about this in the least; in her world, flying was mainly for guys who were jocks, soldiers or both.

"Ah." The wingbleeding thing didn't make sense but the training did. "Well they still look cool."

"Thanks," Alana said with half a smile. "So, have you ever done the whole boarding school thing before? It's totally new ground for me."

"Completely new for me too," he said. "I'm hoping there's less hazing in the dorms than in the movies."

"I would seriously kick the ass of anybody who put shaving cream in my bed or anything like that," Alana said, meaning it. "Hazing sucks, so I'm hoping that right along with you."
