The glittery enthusiasm of the 'Fandom High' banner strung across the wall was a little unexpected, but at least it confirmed Vider was where she was supposed to be, even if no one else appeared to be here yet. That part wasn't surprising, considering how early her flight had gotten in, but she seemed to be dealing with the earliness of the hour remarkably well. It might have had something to do with the fact that she was getting used to never getting quite enough sleep any more.

One of the trainers at the Hangadrottin War College had shoved a wad of unfamiliar money into her hand this morning, 'for the journey,' like she was going to some foreign country and not just the East coast. Still, she wasn't going to turn down money so she'd taken it without complaint and used some of it to buy a tea and pastry for breakfast, and once she picked out a seat by the wall where she could prop her spear case and sword up, she settled in to eat, picking the pastry apart into little shreds before putting them in her mouth.

So far this boarding school thing didn't seem so bad, although she was reserving final judgment until she'd actually seen the school.

Yeah, well. It was a facial tattoo. And she didn't look like Mike Tyson to him.

"Cool." It was not cool at all. "I'm Raleigh."

It was legally required, okay?

"Vider," she said. "Vider Bearskin. Pleased to meet you." What kind of a name was Raleigh?

OKAY, MIKE TYSON.

"Vider," he replied, trying to wrap his tongue around it. "That's cool. Does it mean something?"

"It's just a name," she said, because if Raleigh wasn't familiar with Lokiskin naming practices, she wasn't going to enlighten him on why she was named 'diversion.' "Does Raleigh?" Besides 'my parents were terrible at this'?

"It's a city." Because that was totally the same. No, Raleigh. No. "I got the good name. My brother is Yancy."

"...that is pretty bad," Vider had to admit. What was with these super weird names?

Raleigh grinned because it was possibly an old joke and it totally worked there. "Where are you from?"

"Uh, around?" Vider tried. "I was with a caravan before."

"Oh." That sounded not fun at all. "We traveled around some too when I was younger."

Oh, was he Lokiskin? She didn't see any snakes anywhere, but it could be under his sleeve or whatever. "Yeah, well, can't do that any more, obviously, so they decided to send me here."

He meant on vacation, Vider! Vacation!

"It could be worse," Raleigh mostly guessed.

"That's true," she agreed, "but I still don't see what I need to go to a humanities school for."

"Well, it's high school," Raleigh pointed out. "And it sucks, but it's only four years."

And then... well, he didn't have plans for that. YET.

Well, three for Vider, but, "I know, I just wish I could opt out." Denied, Vider. Denied.

"You could drop out?" That way lead to unwed pregnancies and bad jobs if you listened to Raleigh's junior high teachers.

"Not really an option," Vider said with a shrug. "I answer to too many people now."

"That sucks." Summing it up so eloquently, Raleigh.

"Well, like you said. Could be worse, right?" she asked. "What about you, why are you here?"

"Parents," he said like she totally understood his pain. "They freaked out about San Francisco."

"What about San Francisco?"

Raleigh made a face. "Is this some weird joke on the new guy thing?"

"Why would I do that?" Vider asked. "I'm new, too."

"I don't know, it's weird," Raleigh grumbled. Because Isaac was explaining it in another thread. With his scarf of exposition.

"What's weird? San Francisco?"

If she knew what had happened she would totally agree San Francisco was weird.

"Just some... thing that happened there. And apparently not for everyone else." Thanks for sending him to crazyville, mom!
