Friendship is Always in Fashion, Thursday, period 1

The classroom today looked like . . . well, like it had been decorated to reflect the personalities of the teachers, kind of. One half of the room was done up in bright, shiny colors, decorated with singing birds and happy foxes and mustaches. The other half was draped in dingy gray and flannel.

Guess who was on each side. Go on. Guess.

"Today's fashions are inspired by music," Derek told the class. Yes, he was wearing a pastel cardigan. No, he didn't want to talk about it.

Or music was inspired by them. One of the two.

"Ooo, ooo," Pinkie said. "I have samples!" She almost tripped over the edge of her saggy baggy dingy tshirt as she rushed over to the bright, happy phonograph in the corner. "It's over here, somewhere!" She dug through some records, tossing aside a surprising collection of trance, new wave, classic rock, big band. . . .

Derek casually leaned back to avoid being brained by one of the records. See how used to this he was getting? It could only end in tears.

Now, now, Derek, this wasn't a class on emo, after all. Save your Linkin Park love for another day.

"Twee," Pinkie said, holding up one of the albums triumphantly, "is all about being bright and happy and cheerful and fun! Grunge," she held up another, "is about being apathetic and cynical and kinda needing a bath. Most ponies will sometimes feel bright and happy and sometimes apathetic and cynical! But ponies who really really like the fashions like to look like they only ever feel one or the other."

Well, that was a vast over-simplification of complex subcultures.

As was to be expected in a class taught by a talking pony and the resident fail wolf. So.

"Both styles value dressing comfortably and expressing your emotions through your clothes," Derek added, wishing he was allowed to be showing off grunge. "We have a selection of clothing from each style for you guys to try on."

You could be apathetic twee! Didn't that sound fun?

Rilla stared at her. "No...?"

Well, that was just a wasted opportunity! "Why not?"
