Charming Your Way Into and Out of Things, Monday, Period 2

The Danger Shop it was again this week. When the students came in, they found themselves in what looked like a waiting room. There were comfortable chairs for them, and a door on the other side of the room. The Spirit was standing next to it, greeting them with a nod and a tip of his hat.

"Today you're doing a practical exercisein charming your way out of a situation. One at a time, right through this door here. Don't be scared, it's nothing too hard. Afterwards, we'll talk about how it went, and what you should perhaps take away from the experience." He nodded at a student at random. "You go first."

When students one by one passed through the door, they found themselves in... someone's home. Unmistakably an old person's home. It had that smell about it, and there were family pictures and assorted knick-knacks all over. Also, there was the sound of something breaking as soon as a student walked in. Congratulations, you just knocked over a vase by opening the door.

And then there was an affronted looking little old lady padding into the room and fixing a glare on the poor student. Charm your way out of getting hit with her walking stick or getting a lecture!

As soon as Theo realized what he'd done, he felt awful. And when he saw the elderly lady coming towards him, he started apologizing immediately.

"I'm sorry, I'm very sorry, I'll replace it," he said immediately. The old lady started lecturing him about being more careful and Theo let her lay into him. He was really bad at being charming.

And then Dev seemed to kick him or kick in or something and he snapped out of it. Dev hadn't manifested but the situation was enough to get him to come out a little stronger than usual.

"Look, it's just a vase," Theo said easily. "You've got so many other nice things in this house. The vase, no one's going to notice that it's gone when you're here and being so beautiful."

Ange was scowling and screeching at Dev in his head but Theo couldn't stop himself. The old lady though? She was appeased.

"I am so very sorry," Rilla gasped, putting her hand over her mouth.

Though honestly, lady, don't put breakable things by the door. That's just asking for trouble.

"Was it terribly dear to you?"

It was the least sensible thing ever to put something like that. But that didn't matter! This was her house and she had earned the right to do as she damn well pleased!

"Yes, yes it was," the lady replied with a firm nod. "A dear gift from my aunt, may she rest in peace. And now it's in pieces on the floor! You cannot just barge into people's homes all willy-nilly like that, child!"

Because she was old and crotchety as the good Lord intended?

"I'm terribly sorry about that," Rilla burbled, "but I wanted to be sure you'd heard about a suspected burglar seen in this neighbourbood. He supposed to be quite frightening."

As soon as Mira saw the glare of the old lady, she knew she was in trouble. "I'm really sorry," somehow led to her being yelled at about the way she dressed and how in the old lady's day....

Mira had trouble getting a word in edgewise until she just went in for a hug. "I'm sorry about the vase. I promise to pay you for it, even if that doesn't make up for any sentimental attachment. And if you give me a chance, I'll see what I can do about getting it put back together. Okay?"

The surprise hug seemed to work a minor miracle since Mira didn't get yelled at any more.

After everyone had been in the room, they gathered back in the waiting room.

"So, kiddos, how'd you do? How'd it feel, what do you think you should have done differently?"

"I...did okay," Theo said and he knew that was all on Dev. "Guess the old lady liked having her good looks highlighted?"

The Spirit nodded approvingly, as was his way. "Flattery is always a workable choice. Especially with ladies, who always deserve to hear what marvelous creatures they are."

And he was sincere about that.

"Would you have used the same approach if it'd been a fella instead?"

"Probably but with a different bent," Theo said, still weirded out by Dev having pretty much taken over for a few seconds there. "I like being flattered and I'm a guy. I don't know if I'd have gone with calling him attractive or anything but I would have found something else to compliment on."

The Spirit nodded again.

"And do you think this is a situation you might find yourself out of class?"

Knocking old ladies' vases around was a serious problem!

"I don't...think so," Theo said after some thought. "I don't really find myself in situations where I knock things down. If anything's being knock down, it's usually me."

He was here.

He was maybe here too.

Theo was there and rubbing his neck in anticipation of doing this exercise. He'd probably suck at it.

The heatwave is over and I can think and ping more again! YAY.
