Library, Thursday

It was actually a nice, quiet day at the library today. The books weren't up to their usual shenanigans, unless the lot of them heaping themselves up in a pile and... Evan was pretty sure they were napping, actually... unless that counted.

He had made himself comfortable behind his desk, reading a book about Egyptian pharaohs and nodding a little to himself. Now and again, he'd get up to put away a book or two that somebody had returned.

But mostly, it was a nice, quiet day.

If you want to let Evan read in peace!

He'll be happy to put his book down if you need anything.

"Hi Evan," Sholeh said, ducking into the library with a large stack of books of her own to return. Don't worry, she'd shelve them herself. "You look like you're having a nice, relaxing day!"

"Sholeh!" Evan perked up as she walked into the library, grabbing a loose sheet of paper to mark his place in and then setting aside his book in order to go and help her with hers. "It's been pretty pleasant so far. I think some of the books are napping... Did you know that books nap? I mean, I guess they fight and play sometimes, so napping at least kind of makes sense..."

Didn't it?

It made about as much sense as anything to do with the books did!

She handed some of the books over to him, since he seemed so obliging. But she didn't come here to talk about books (oddly enough). She had important news to share! "Guess what! We're going to have class together tomorrow!"

"We are?" See Evan! See Evan bounce a little on his toes! "I remember reading that note about you talking to Professor Dracula on the radio! He's letting you audit his class? I'm TAing for him, I can help you catch up on the classes you've missed so far, if you want!"

This was totally super-exciting news!

Right? Right?

"He did!" Sholeh said, beaming. "I went in and talked to him and he seemed kind of intimidating for a little while, but really competent, too. So, yes, he said we could audit the course, so long as we behaved well and did the work."

Which, of course, wasn't difficult to promise at all.

"What have I missed?" she asked.

"Introductions, mostly," Evan replied with a little shrug as he started sorting through the books she'd brought back. "And a class about vampires. Professor Dracula went through a list of things that people believe about them, and then debunked each one before doing a question and answer period. I took notes, if you want to borrow them."

"The only things I know about vampires is what Professor Priest covered in his class about supernatural creatures," Sholeh said, nodding. "It will be useful to see what Professor Dracula has to say instead."

She licked her lips and then added, "Have you noticed that when it comes to stuff like this, the teachers generally disagree with one another?"

A very daring statement to make.

Evan tilted his head a little at that assessment, and then he nodded a bit, himself.

"I have," he admitted. "I think it might have something to do with the way different people evolved in different ways across the multiverse. Did you know that in most realities, mutants like me apparently defy pretty much every law of physics and biology out there? Things to do with where extra matter comes from, or energy that can't just create itself. I have a friend who has wings, who shouldn't be able to get off the ground at all, all the same."

Stuff like this fascinated Evan.

"What I think is fascinating is how so many worlds developed with the same word for things, even though they aren't the same!" Sholeh said, eyes sparkling. "There are many things that drink blood, and Professor Priest's vampires aren't much like Professor Dracula, but they're still called vampires and not something else!"

The books had been set aside on the counter in favor of talking with Evan about how cool the multiverse was.

"Maybe it's kind of like some kind of... convergent evolution," Evan offered. "It's not just a matter of being the same words for things, though. I mean, everyone here on the island speaks the same language. What are the odds of something like that?"

"Really low," Sholeh agreed. "People from different parts of this planet don't even speak the same language, so it makes no sense that people from other worlds would, too. But it's not just convergent evolution, you know. With the rate of language shift, there's no reason that people from this planet's past and future should be speaking English, either, but here they are all!"

"It's crazy, really. Like... like there's something that guides different things along a sort of parallel path of development. My world has a lot of things from almost every other reality I've met people from, here, and I have no idea why others don't, or never could, even if we have the same language, or similar technology, and sometimes even the same books!"

"Is that an argument for some kind of multiversal god or something, do you think?" Sholeh asked, cupping her chin in her hand.

Stop flirting, you two.

"You know... maybe it is?" Evan tapped a finger to his chin, looking thoughtful. "My, um... I mean, I was raised... That is to say..." He made a face, trying to find a way to put it. "The family that Fantomex created for me was pretty religious. I guess I kind of just took for granted that there would be one."

"We have a goddess," Sholeh said, dropping her voice a little. Even after having told Evan her secret, it still felt weird to talk about such things in front of someone not Tryad. "But she's...I don't think we think she's the goddess of everyone. Just us."

Evan gave a thoughtful tilt of his head, to that.

"That's... neat, actually," he offered. "Plenty of Earth religions have gods for specific things, or groups of people. Like in the book I'm reading about Egypt... they had gods for almost everything."

So, it hadn't been much of a stretch for En Sabah Nur to want to establish himself as one, too.

Or several.

If he's in today!

John was there, with enough tea to drown England in.

He was trying to cut back on coffee. It probably wouldn't last.

I kind of love how many icons of Evan with books I have.
