"You've all heard the saying, 'A diamond is forever'. What does that make you think of? Romance? An engagement? Love? Forget all that. It's the result of a decades long marketing campaign (http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/198202/diamond) that first got started in the 1930's to prop up a sagging diamond market.

Today there's a tremendous volume of diamonds on the market. But did you ever wonder about the origins of those diamonds? A portion of the diamonds on the market today can be called conflict or blood diamonds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conflict_diamonds). They're diamonds that mined in a war zone and sold usually clandestinely, in order to finance an insurgent or invading army's war efforts.

Some efforts have been made to stop the sale of blood diamonds but much more still needs to be done. Consider that when you think about spending two months salary to buy an engagement ring in a few years guys."

[ooc: The link I gave to the marketing campaign? Is a really, really interesting read.]
