Filia is the familial appeal. Give me examples of how absolute strangers draw you in and can persuade you by pushing those buttons that trigger your need for intimate connection.

Phoebe stumbles into class late, but she is all smiles. She signs in and delivers a passionate speech about how sometimes the most simple of things sells love better than anything else in the world can.

"You've all heard the saying, 'A diamond is forever'. What does that make you think of? Romance? An engagement? Love? Forget all that. It's the result of a decades long marketing campaign (http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/198202/diamond) that first got started in the 1930's to prop up a sagging diamond market.

Today there's a tremendous volume of diamonds on the market. But did you ever wonder about the origins of those diamonds? A portion of the diamonds on the market today can be called conflict or blood diamonds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conflict_diamonds). They're diamonds that mined in a war zone and sold usually clandestinely, in order to finance an insurgent or invading army's war efforts.

Some efforts have been made to stop the sale of blood diamonds but much more still needs to be done. Consider that when you think about spending two months salary to buy an engagement ring in a few years guys."

[ooc: The link I gave to the marketing campaign? Is a really, really interesting read.]

Barbossa began his speech talking about the differences in the celebration of Valentine's Day in his time and this one and ended up giving something of a mini-rant about the pointlessness of the messages on candy hearts.

He's not sure how he got there, either.

Bel is late as well, and looks like he got dressed in a hurry. His speech is on how it's kinda silly that one day is marketed as the day of love when the day after, or the day after that, can be just as nice if not better.

Alanna delivered a speech about a holiday that is celebrated in her country. She also pointed out that it's usually celebrated by couples that want kids and a lot of the population has their birthday about three months before the holiday. No, she's not sure what that has to do with the topic.

Maia signed in.

"I think maybe people who treat you like they have always known you, pull you into a hug when they meet you...those sorts of things can draw a person in if you don't mind your space invaded by a stranger. My friend Phoebe, when I met her, it was like an instant thing. She came around the corner before we even really met and she knew who I was and stuff..." Maia kinda trailed off unsure if that is the kind of example C.J. wanted or not.

Shep sits over in the corner with his hand clamped over his mouth. For some reason the word 'stranger', 'pushing buttons'and 'intimate connections' has has brain running around in circles. All he can come up with 'isn't that what what leads guys to prostitutes?' and he's pretty sure that's not where CJ is going with this.

Boone gave a speech because the internet might be back and slowplay might be our evil gods, but the player is going to be late!
