Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of tables and chairs scattered around the lawn for anyone who wanted to sit down once they'd had their fill of the buffet, or to recover from starting to find out what this place was all about. No one would judge the need to take a mental breather.

Some of the tables were out in the open, for those who weren't allergic to the sun, and some of the tables were in the shade, or far from the rest of the crowd for those who needed a little more space to process. Wherever people decided to rest, there was space enough for everyone.

[OOC: This is part two of the picnic, separated in an effort to save our browsers for as long as possible. Part one, to run into siblings, roommates and teachers, is over here, though teachers are also welcome in this post, of course. Because the picnic is outside, it is open to all students, teachers and townies.]

Mordin noticed the long gaze from a human close to him and closed the distance between them, holding out his hand in the human gesture of greeting. "Hello. Mordin Solus. Salarian visitor. Student here."

Hannibal nodded at the being and took...his? her? its? hand, shaking it firmly. It really was an intriguing texture and consistency. "Hello. Doctor Hannibal Lecter; I'm a new teacher here. I hope you will pardon my staring; I'm unfamiliar with your species."

"Unsurprising, most humans are." But Mordin appreciated his calm demeanor. So far, no one had reacted negatively to his presence. It was reassuring. "Extraterrestial to Earth. From a planet in the Planas System. Feel free to ask questions. Here to teach as much as to learn."

"That is an excellent perspective to take." Hannibal nodded. "I find the best students also teach their teachers, whether they intend to or not." He eyed Mordin. Good social skills only took you so far when you were used to dealing exclusively with humans.

Well, find the commonalities and differences. "How are you finding Earth so far? This is your first time here?"

"First time. First contact with humans. Find them...agreeable." Mordin paused. "You teach. Saw roster, don't remember all classes. Lapse and failing, on my part. Which class?"

Hannibal smiled; under that twisted prose, he was fairly sure Mordin was being respectful. "I'm beginning with The Philosophy of Food. I hope to teach my students to look more deeply into what they consider food and how they approach it."

He eyed Mordin thoughtfully. "For instance, what do you consider to be food? I can't imagine that all this," he waved at the buffet tables, "is usual for you."

"Done my homework. Both humans and salarians are levo-protein based. Possible to ingest food similar to one another." Mordin looked down at his burger, still untouched. "Curious as to what this is. Seems to be flesh? Most of native salarian diet is plant and insect-based, but contact with other species has widened our palate to include meat."

Hannibal gestured at the burger. "The most usual meat for a hamburger is beef, the meat of a grown cow." Hm. "A four-legged ruminant." Hopefully that would suffice.

"For the culture those come from, that meat is a staple. But there are some where it would be taboo. And many where insects would not be considered food." He leaned in, smiling. "At least voluntarily."

Well, until the first week of class.

"Insects still holding status as dietary supplement for most families, but losing popularity. Associated with primitive cultures."

Mordin took a bravely large bite from the burger and chewed thoughtfully.

"More tender than nathak meat. But still believe I would prefer vegetation. Must try everything, though! Thank you for providing information--will keep 'beef' in mind when salad is not available."

"There are a number of meats other than that." Some more socially acceptable than others, granted, but the hamburger should never stand as a representative of cuisine! "Much of the flavor and texture comes from the manner in which they're prepared."

"One moment." Hannibal set his bag on the grass and extracted a sandwich neatly wrapped in butcher paper. He cut off a few inches and pulled the paper back. It would mean less for him, but he could always cook more later, and he simply could not let this stand. [OOC: * Only not open-faced, and Hannibal makes his own bread.]

Mordin smiled and bowed his head respectfully. He wasn't sure about Earth culture, but for his and some others, the sharing of food was a sign of trust on both parties' parts, and a sign of protection on the part of the giver. Mordin could surmise that even without the gravity his culture afforded food-sharing, for a doctor so passionate about food as to teach a class on it to share his meal was an honor.

"Many thanks, Doctor." Mordin took the offered sandwich and tried it thoughtfully.

He nodded enthusiastically when he swallowed, the staccato of his voice even more punchy than usual as he said, "Ah yes! Much more impressive fare. Very good, very good! Made yourself? See why you teach Philosophy of Food. Very skilled."

A sign of trust was certainly one way to put it.

Hannibal nodded, satisfied. And rather disappointed he'd felt the need to go with actual pork for this prosciutto, but there simply hadn't been time for anything else. "Thank you. Yes, I am rather careful of my food, and prepare most of it myself.

"Perhaps you'll be able to take one of my classes at some point. It would be a shame not to experience some of the variety we have to offer."

"Would be honored to take a class with you, sir." Mordin rather liked this man. Perhaps it was the ingrained reaction to a social cue he didn't even know applied on this planet, or maybe it was his calm and informative demeanor, but he very much looked forward to getting to work with him more. "Will enjoy learning under your tutelage."

"And I look forward to learning more of you and your people," Hannibal replied. "I hope you will consider my office doors always open to you."
