Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of tables and chairs scattered around the lawn for anyone who wanted to sit down once they'd had their fill of the buffet, or to recover from starting to find out what this place was all about. No one would judge the need to take a mental breather.

Some of the tables were out in the open, for those who weren't allergic to the sun, and some of the tables were in the shade, or far from the rest of the crowd for those who needed a little more space to process. Wherever people decided to rest, there was space enough for everyone.

[OOC: This is part two of the picnic, separated in an effort to save our browsers for as long as possible. Part one, to run into siblings, roommates and teachers, is over here, though teachers are also welcome in this post, of course. Because the picnic is outside, it is open to all students, teachers and townies.]

"There's conflicting reports," Gert granted, "but as far as I can tell, someone from her home planet showed up, fired at her and the rest of Team Runaway a couple times, and made some kind of 'offer she couldn't refuse' -- Liara's words -- that had her running off to space with this jerk."

She made a dramatic gesture with her hands to indicate that she found this whole situation ridiculous.

"Sorry about Regina," she added a little more sympathetically. "That's pretty high-level crappy parenting."

But, well. Regina.

"It's like -- Daphne got this whole amazing family out of the baby swap deal and I got a mom who runs away every time I try to get close," Bay complained. "But I guess it could be worse. I could be a mafia space princess. Also, was I supposed to know Karolina was an alien?"

Not that she'd actually ever said more than hi to Karolina, but -- details.

"I can see how your parents might grate on her nerves too, though," Gert offered, albeit kind of gently. "Your dad's kind of the anti-Regina. He probably gets pretty intense to have on your case all the time."

But then, there was a pretty deeply repressed part of Gert that wished she could have even one non-evil, living parent, and Bay had four, even if they all sucked in their own ways.

"And -- crap. You're right, I think she was kind of keeping it on the DL." Not that Gert agreed with that call, necessarily, but it was Karolina's choice. Anyway, she didn't think she had to worry about Bay spreading it all around campus or anything. "Well, yeah. Planet's called Majesdane. She didn't even know until pretty recently, so it's kind of-- switched-at-birth-y."

"Believe me, I'm not captain of the John Kennish fan club right now either," Bay said, then waved a hand dismissively. She knew Gert didn't necessarily want to hear about every second of her family drama, especially when Gert was so lacking in the family department herself. "But that's ... okay, up until the part where she had to go back, that's kind of cool. How'd she find out?"

"Same way as the rest of us found out our parents were evil, except even worse," Gert said. "She'd been wearing a Med-Alert bracelet her whole life 'cause supposedly she was allergic to penicillin? When we were rooting around her house, we found a cryptic message her parents meant to give her a few years from now that basically told her to take the bracelet off to unlock her powers, and it turns out she's this totally brightly-colored alien who's like a pastel artist's dream come true. When she doesn't have the suppressor on, anyway."

A parental tactic that, if you asked Gert, was about ninety kinds of squicky.

Bay wrinkled her nose. "Okay, even without the villain thing her parents are all types of fail for not telling her."

"Yeah, tell me about it," Gert agreed. "Anyway, now apparently she has obligations to this other planet she's from, which I'd bet anything her parents locked her into from the time she could crawl or whatever, and she's off doing that because Karolina doesn't know how to just say she's not interested in helping people."

She exhaled, slowly. "So we're both having an awesome few days, it sounds like."

"Yeaaah," Bay drawled sympathetically. "I guess it's good she wants to help people? I mean, as reasons to go into outer space go, that's a pretty decent one."
