Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of tables and chairs scattered around the lawn for anyone who wanted to sit down once they'd had their fill of the buffet, or to recover from starting to find out what this place was all about. No one would judge the need to take a mental breather.

Some of the tables were out in the open, for those who weren't allergic to the sun, and some of the tables were in the shade, or far from the rest of the crowd for those who needed a little more space to process. Wherever people decided to rest, there was space enough for everyone.

[OOC: This is part two of the picnic, separated in an effort to save our browsers for as long as possible. Part one, to run into siblings, roommates and teachers, is over here, though teachers are also welcome in this post, of course. Because the picnic is outside, it is open to all students, teachers and townies.]

"Thanks. And the key is hydration" Mira said, holding up her bottle. "And also being way too used to it."

"That's still pretty hardcore," Bay said. "Unless you, like, come from a planet where all the clothes are leather."

She shoved her hair out of her face with a hand. "Anyhow, hi, I'm Bay. I promise I don't normally start conversations by quizzing people about their clothes."

"Most of the people on my planet wear filthy cloth at the moment," Mira said. "Relatively speaking, I'm a fashion plate just on the basis of being clean."

"I'm Mira. And don't worry. I'm used to talking about my clothes. It's a conversation starter."

"See, I was kidding about the 'on your planet' thing and it turns out you're literally from another planet," Bay observed. "That's the kind of ting that only happens in Fandom. And, uh, good for you on the being clean thing."

"It's something I'm proud of," Mira said. "So you've been here long enough not to be confused by people from other planets?"

"Since January," Bay confirmed. "I mean, personally I'm from a world where going to the moon is a big huge deal. But you hear something ebough, you get used to it, right?"

Mira nodded as if she knew when January was. Clearly, she was going to need to get a calendar sooner rather than later. "Makes sense. I mean, if you go to school with people from space, the novelty's going to wear off. I mean, I'm sure I'll feel the same way about going to school with people from here in no time."

And it didn't even occur to Bay that January might be a confusing concept.

"Probably," Bay said. "I wish I could say we, like, ate with our feet or something bizarre like that, but the truth is most of us are pretty normal. Even the people with powers are normal the rest of the time."

"People have powers here? Like Jedi?" Mira checked.

"I'm not exactly clear on what a Jedi can do," Bay said apologetically. "But sure, let's go with that. And, like, my best friend here has a psychic bond to her pet dinosaur."

"Jedi do things, and lots of them," Mira said, waving it off. "It really doesn't matter compared to telepathic bonds with pets. Unless Jedi can do that, too. I'm not sure."

"Probably it depends on what the pet is," Bay said thoughtfully. "Like, a telepathic bond with something with giant freaking claws is way more interesting than a telepathic bond with ... do you know what a goldfish is?"

"I'm going to guess it's a fish without giant freaking claws," Mira said.

"And you're already catching on," Bay said. "They're about the size of my thumb. Supposedly their memories are three seconds."

"Okay, your point is officially taken. That's even worse than I thought it was going to be," Mira decided.

"I wasn't even sure I had a point," Bay admitted, and smiled. "So how'd you end up here, anyhow? Make it up if that's a completely nosy question."

"I made the wrong people mad by being too great at my job and one of my clients thought it would be in his best interests if he got me off planet for a while," Mira said. "You know, that old story."

"Oh, yeah, I hear that one all the time," Bay nodded. "What kind of job were you doing?"

It sounded like it might be something illegal or at least shady, if it was the kind of thing you could get sent off a planet to protect you because of, but that just made Bay more curious.

"I'm a bounty hunter," Mira said. "A pretty good one, too, which some people on my planet don't really like."

"Awesome career choice," Bay said. "I'm ... an artist who works in a diner. Less glamorous, but less threat I'll get killed, so it evens out."

"Hey, everyone has their niche. You can create great things. I can track a deadbeat across a crowded planet and knock him in the back of the head. We both have our roles to play in society," Mira said. Although she might argue that what she did was kind of an art, too.
