Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of tables and chairs scattered around the lawn for anyone who wanted to sit down once they'd had their fill of the buffet, or to recover from starting to find out what this place was all about. No one would judge the need to take a mental breather.

Some of the tables were out in the open, for those who weren't allergic to the sun, and some of the tables were in the shade, or far from the rest of the crowd for those who needed a little more space to process. Wherever people decided to rest, there was space enough for everyone.

[OOC: This is part two of the picnic, separated in an effort to save our browsers for as long as possible. Part one, to run into siblings, roommates and teachers, is over here, though teachers are also welcome in this post, of course. Because the picnic is outside, it is open to all students, teachers and townies.]

His father, shining example of parenting that he was, had given Flick the absolute bare bones story about this place. It was a school, he could hide here while his father figured things out and not to make an ass of himself because he didn't need to draw more attention than already was on him.

Such a good father.

If he'd been any better, he'd have given Flick some money for some clothes but he hadn't. So, the clothes on his back and the meager money in his pocket were going to have to do until he find something to steal and sell.

He'd had better days.

"Hey, do you need any help or anything?" Victor asked the new guy, whose face didn't exactly scream I am about to die of newbie picnic bliss. "I know this isn't everybody's scene."

When the question came, Flick actually looked around like the guy was talking to someone else that wasn't him. People didn't tend to ask if he needed help. Well, unless they were Joi and this guy wasn't Joi.

"Better than a lot of scenes out there, though," Flick said because it was warm and there wasn't any violence or people looking at him like he was lunch. "And I'm --- "

Gonna run out of clothes tomorrow but he'd figure that out. There had to be some quick cash opportunities around.

" -- just getting my bearings. It's bright here."

"Yeah, it's finally summer," Victor nodded, wondering if brightness was somehow a bad thing. "The dorms don't get too hot or anything, though. I guess it goes with the 'castle' thing."

It wasn't a bad thing but for someone who'd been isolated inside for awhile, it was a novel thing. Mandel was regulated so stringently that the he'd taken the seasons for granted.

"Castle." Yeah, he'd noticed that on the way in. Probably what drew his father to this place. A castle meant someone was wealthy and his father loved to show what he could afford. "There that many students here that this place needs a castle?"

"Nah, place is tiny," Victor said dismissively. "I think somebody was just showing off when they built it. There are, like, 75 kids. You get to know everybody."

From his tone, it was clear this was a mixed blessing.

"I'm from L.A. I think my old homeroom had more people than my whole grade here."

Flick guessed even Mandel Academy had more than seventy five people even with their low enrollment classes. It tended to add up when some kids were there for years and years on end.

"Sounds quaint," Flick said with a small chuckle. "Though, I'm not sure I want everyone knowing me. That just kills the mystery, doesn't it?"

"Kind of, but you can be mysterious even if people know you," Victor protested. "Some days I think half the student body's walking around with some huge secret -- or at least acting like they have one."

"That include you?"

Flick didn't think this guy was just going come out with his secrets, of course, but sometimes you could catch people off guard. Always good to test the waters.

There was a second of surprise in Victor's eyes before he deflected the question with a laugh. It wasn't that his android status was a secret, exactly, but these days he tended to only tell people he once he trusted them.

"Man, start with names and then we'll talk about secrets," he said. "I'm Victor. You?"

"Flick," he said and if he noticed the surprise, he wasn't going to say anything about it. It wasn't his place. "Nice to meet you, Victor. And I'm cool with waiting for secrets till the first date."

This was a joke rather than trying to catch Victor off guard.

"Real name or code name?" Victor asked, mostly out of habit. "And sure. But I should warn you, I'm not a cheap date."

Also a joke.

"Only name," Flick replied, unable to keep some steeliness out of his voice. He clung to his name like a shield most days. It was battered and duct taped but it still worked.

When he spoke next, the steeliness was gone. "Well, you're probably gonna be disappointed because I've got maybe five bucks to my name. I'd be the cheapest date."

Only name. Huh. Victor could tell it was important to Flick, so he backed off.

"Yeah?" he asked. "It's pretty easy to get a job in town if you want one."

"Don't you have to have a resume and references for that sort of thing?"

It wasn't a bad idea, actually, and it'd be a good distraction, at least. He could make money the honest way and the dishonest way. Play both sides of the coin and toe the line and all that philosophical crap.

He'd think about it. "I have neither."

"There are so many people from different universes here that it doesn't matter," Victor said. "Seriously, when I got hired at the repair shop the owner didn't even ask for ID. It's ... kind of freaky, actually. Useful, but freaky."

"And what about previous experience?" Flick wondered curiously. He didn't have much of that either. His previous education wasn't going to do him any favors either.

Though, he wasn't going to be getting into that if he could help it.

"Probably depends what you want to do?" Victor speculated. He didn't have any formal experience, but he suspected he'd been a special case. "But I don't think anybody on the island is too picky. What kind of job are you thinking about?"

"None, really. Just asking general questions," Flick responded with another shrug. For once, he was trying to listen to his father and not draw attention to himself but he guessed that would not last.

"In case I do decide that I need to join the rat race and all," he added after a moment. "I figure I can live off my hopes and dreams for awhile."

They'd run out in another five minutes.
