Combat Tech, Tuesday Morning (1st Period)

The Danger Shop contained a table full of parts and some workbenches. Behind that stood a wall with a single door in it.

In front of everything was Kaidan, his arms crossed.

"This is your final," he said. "You've got twenty-five minutes to grab some parts and put something together. A weapon, a shield, whatever you think will be useful. Then you've got to run the gauntlet. Good luck."

He stepped out of the way.

Well, at least Jim had paid attention in this class. He went to work on building something lightweight. After some thought, he decided on some shielding for the moment since he wasn't sure if ammo would run out and he didn't know what type of things he'd be facing so he went for defense.

Right about now, Jessica was very glad she spent some time checking out the kinetic shields earlier in the semester. By the end of the 25 minutes, she had a workable version ready. Bring it, gauntlet.

Anakin, if he hadn't been totally distracted by his newfound realization that he had hormones, probably could've managed to cobble together some kinetic shielding and something like a rudimentary force pike in 25 minutes.

But no, so he only accomplished the shielding. Which was fine. He could get by.

Victor bit his lip as he set in to work, enjoying the challenge of it. He figured his powers would serve as a weapon, so he concentrated on a shield. He was just about satisfied with it at the end of 25 minutes.

Jim's shield was complete and he'd strapped it to his arm so covering up under it and moving past the turrets wasn't actually that hard. The impact made him stumble once or twice but otherwise, he was good to go through the first obstacle.

Jessica had her lightweight kinetic shield on and was going to rely on speed for the rest. She wasn't running as fast as she could, but the shield meant that she didn't need to. She made it past the turrets easily.

In between the shield and plenty of practice dodging and deflecting Yuuzhan Vong thud bugs, getting past the turrets unscathed wasn't a problem.

Anakin was, however, really disturbed by how they kept talking to him. Not that he wasn't used to droids talking -- he'd grown up around Threepio and Artoo -- but nothing that was shooting at him should sound that cute.

Yep, still glad he'd picked the shielding because as soon as that paint started pouring, Jim held it up over his head like an umbrella and watched it slop off the sides and around his feet.

Man, what a mess.

Jessica decided to just run ahead in a straight line, regardless of which tile she was stepping on. There were a couple close calls that her shield protected her from, but it wasn't that bad.

The first red tile Anakin stepped on resulted in him getting splashed with a bit of paint -- he did get the shield up barely in time to escape the worst of it, but that was a lot of paint and he was going to have to change his pants after class or look like he'd just waded through a rancor's guts.

Having figured that out, though, it wasn't too tricky to dodge the red tiles the rest of the way.

Re: The Gauntlet - Mechs

This was a little harder without a gun of some kind. Sure, he could deflect the paintballs (though some nailed his legs and shoes) but he couldn't make them stop shooting. He could only deflect and run.

He ran into dead ends several times and had to turn back which meant that he had to face more mechs. Eventually, he found his way out.

[identity profile] nonelikemesince.livejournal.com 2013-06-25 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Mechs weren't Yuuzhan Vong, luckily, and therefore perfectly susceptible to telekinetic attacks.

Anakin couldn't resist being a huge showoff, though, and rather than just Force-throwing all of them against the walls he took the extra time to use the Force to disable the circuitry on the last mech.

This was not the point of the test, probably, but after all Corran's lecturing about his use of the Force he felt a bit like reassuring himself that he got by just fine with the methods he'd always used.

"Crap!" Jim said and immediately held up the shield while he took shelter against the walls. One paintball had nailed his chest when he'd come into the room but he was otherwise good.

He adjusted his shield, checking to make sure the paintballs hadn't damaged it before he started moving again.

[identity profile] nonelikemesince.livejournal.com 2013-06-25 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, Sithspawn," Anakin swore when a couple of paintballs clipped his shoulder and leg.

Now the shield came in handy while he Force-boosted his speed to get the kriff through the room as fast as possible.

Re: The Gauntlet - Nerf

[personal profile] pursuedthestars 2013-06-25 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, Jim was just going to go for it. He held up the shield and ran. He got swiped with paint a few times but the shield mostly did it's job and kept him from getting completely soaked in paint.

Re: The Gauntlet - Nerf

[identity profile] nonelikemesince.livejournal.com 2013-06-25 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
The shield was not so much help this time, and Anakin did try to Force-deflect the Nerf bats on his way through.

Unfortunately, that had the effect of knocking them around hard enough that he got well splattered with paint from the brushes anyway. Sigh.

Re: The Gauntlet - And Yet More Mechs

[personal profile] pursuedthestars 2013-06-25 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, this sucked. Jim kept his shield up and tried to find some weak spot or way to get past these guys.

He stalked into the room, drawing to draw the mechs away from the entrance so he could sneak by them. A few of them moved but Jim figured he was going to have to pretty much barrel through the line.

So, that's what he did and it wasn't a great idea but at least he was large enough to burst through and get into the exit.

Re: The Gauntlet - And Yet More Mechs

[identity profile] nonelikemesince.livejournal.com 2013-06-25 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Anakin's tactics ended up being more or less along the same line as Jim's: he waited for the first hint of an opening, helped that opening along with a Force shove, then made a run for it.

No points for style, but he would argue that it worked, didn't it? (He could still see Corran glaring at him for saying that, too.)

Jim was pretty covered in paint but he figured it could be worse. He was still going to soak in a long, long shower when class was over.

He deserved it.

I so went back and forth on using them and then said fuck it. MAYBE HE FOUND SOME LEFT-OVER ASSETS FROM GLADOS OR SOMETHING.
