Introduction to Archaeology, 5th Period

The TV is once again in pride of place, and there's a different selection of snacks and soda.

"Okay, today, we're going to be watching Time Team: Live in Canterbury," Daniel explained. "Time Team is a popular British show, which deals with the process of field archaeology in the UK.

A bit of background on Canterbury. It's a cathedral city in south-east Kent. It's home to the Archbishop of Canterbury, who is the primate of the Church of England.

In Latin, it was known as Durovernum Cantiacorum, and it lay at the junction of roads from three of their ports; Regulbium (Reculver), Dubris (Dover) and Lemanis (Lympne)

The Cathedral was where Thomas a Becket was murdered in 1170. After this, Canterbuy became a major pilgrimage site, which lead, or leads," Daniel looked slightly confused at the tenses. "Chaucer to write The Canterbury Tales.

Okay, I think I've talked enough."

The lights were dimmed, and the show started.

Pippi watches the video and, while the reenactments by the school children look like fun, she's having trouble staying focused.

[[ooc: The mun may have seen an episode of this show from another site and while it wasn't exactly garbage I was not exactly impressed at the producers attempts to interject some "drama" into the dig. If this is that show, Pippi feels pretty much the same way.

[[ooc: Time Team's not actually that bad. From what I remember (I don't really watch TV!), it's pretty accurate on what archaeology is like. Although sometimes the trying to solve a mystery bit can get old pretty fast.

[[ooc: Yes that was it exactly. In the episode I watched they were exivating a Roman ceramics "factory" and they had a guy in a building somewhere away from the site making a replica of a type of bowl the factory produced. They kept cutting away from the dig to this guy making the bowl, which was pretty cool, but it was like... "The site has to shut down in three days! WILL HE GET THE BOWL DONE IN TIME?"

And watching the process of how the bowl was made was cool and illustrated very well what it was they were excavating, but all the drama about the bowl was completely unnecessary.

[[ooc: We're apparently still not at the point where academic programs can simply just be academic unfortunately. Probably because an actual pure archaeology show would bore a lot of the potential viewing audience to death!]]
