The weather had improved, at least in terms of temperature, and the clouds overhead didn't look like they were going to burst. So Ender had directed his class to the lawn again, where he sat in the grass with the bag of sandwiches by his side.

"So," he said, "How do you feel about the future now?"

"Does a Queen need great Jewel strength to rule a Territory?" Ender asked, looking her in the eye. "Or strength of character?"

"Strength of character will always be what I feel is the most important thing for a Queen of any place to have," she answered immediately. "But how can you protect your people if you don't have the power to defend them from someone that tries to use power to hurt or enslave them?"

"By making sure you surround yourself with good people willing to employ brute force when necessary," Ender said, "And relying on yourself to ensure they really only do apply it when necessary."
