Surf & Turf, Wednesday, Period Four

Today Bond had his class meet him down at the docks, where he was waiting at the end of the furthest out jetty. Once they were in the water, Bond began.

"Now today's exercise is inspired by a ceremony certain Orthodox Christian Churches hold during Epiphany called the Great Blessing of the Waters, which involves amongst other things, a cross being tossed into the waters and the young men all swimming to retrieve it, with the one who does so gaining blessings for himself and his family. Now I'm not religious, and as far as I know none of you are either, so rather rather than a cross you'll be retrieving this." Because a neon orange fibreglass stick was much less sacrilegious. "And instead of blessings, I'll pay off the winner's tab at Caritas."

That wasn't a particularly appropriate prize, but Bond was sure it'd provide enough motivation.

Cade didn't think Billy had run up much of a tab, but he and Jessica had killed a bottle of tequila the other night and Tino hadn't given them the cheap stuff.

Swim, Cade, swim like a fish!

Billy definitely did not have much of a tab at Caritas, but that didn't mean he wasn't going to try his best. His best, however, wasn't that great--being on land was so much easier than swimming, so this was probably good practice.
