Try Not to Die!!! [Tuesday, June 4, 2013, 3rd period]

The students had been told to wear their swimsuits under their clothing today and then to meet up at the Portalocity office.

"Today is going to be hot," Ben said with a smile. "You're going to Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates and it's about 115 degrees already--a nice early summer morning."

Anakin grew up on Tatooine, so that kind of weather didn't impress him much. "Please be on your best behavior: the Emiratees are more liberal than many of their neighbors, but that doesn't mean they love sleeveless shirts and miniskirts," he warned. "If you're concerned about what you're wearing, we've provided pants and button-up shirts for you to change into. Other than that, have fun, don't get too lost in the souq, and we'll see you at the finish line.q

Ben laughed. "When has dignity ever met our family?"

Anakin opened his mouth to reply, thought of -- absolutely nothing, and snapped his mouth shut again, looking mildly sulky.

"I'll think of a time eventually."

Needle, haystack.

"You'll be really late for Jaina's class, then," Ben said.

Anakin glared at him. "There's nobody related to me who isn't a pain."

Stating the obvious.

"Our friends aren't much help either," Ben said, grinning back.

"I've noticed that too," Anakin said, though there was really no need for him to look so longsuffering about it.

Ben reached out to ruffle Anakin's hair. "Poor, poor you."

Anakin swatted at his hand. "That goes for you too, you know."

"Well, yes, but my best friend is Tony Stark," Ben replied. "I kind of expect him not to be that helpful."

"And mine --" Anakin grinned crookedly. Not that he was blushing or anything. "We don't mean to get in trouble all the time, it just happens."

Ben smiled back. "How's she doing?"

"Better," said Anakin, clearly relieved about it. "She still has some bad days, but I think she's mostly back to being herself. As much as possible, considering. It shouldn't be long before we can get back in action."

Which would be good, because he was going to start literally climbing the walls before long otherwise.

Ben nodded, mostly so Anakin wouldn't be able to see the pain in his eyes.

"What's your next move? Do you know?"

Anakin was a little too preoccupied with his own concern to notice, anyway.

"Not sure yet," he admitted. "Booster's still got the Errant Venture jumping all around the galaxy until we figure out someplace safe for the Academy kids."

"I'd say Shelter," Ben said, "but the ambiance leaves something to be desired."

What with the invisible tentacle monster and all.

And nobody needed tentacle trauma on top of everything else.

"I'll make a note of that," Anakin told him. "With any luck they might even listen to me."

Ben smiled. "They might."

"It has to happen sometime, right?" asked Anakin. "Statistically speaking, it's not impossible."

Anakin, you nerd.

"Just state your opinion clearly and calmly," Ben replied. "And if that doesn't work, drive your lightsaber into the floor and move to a different galaxy."

Anakin snorted. "And ruin the effect in case you do that later on?"

"It gets their attention," Ben said, grinning back. "Beat Jacen to being the drama queen."

Anakin rolled his eyes. "Too late for that, anyway."

Ben smiled a little wryly. "Then be the reasonable one."

That would be a challenge after developing a reputation for being the overly impulsive one, but nothing wrong with challenges.

"Okay, that I can try," Anakin said, a touch amused at taking advice from someone who technically shouldn't be old enough to give him advice yet.

"They might be shocked by the novelty of any of us being reasonable," Ben said a little wryly.
