"Good morning," Yeul said from the front of the classroom. She would have kept them outside, but the weather was poor and while Yeul did not mind… she was aware other people would. "Professor Wiggin is absent today and I am to lead class in his stead."

Which was what it was. She assumed he would be back at some point. A tray of sandwiches along with juice and coffee were on the table to her left.

"I was not left with a topic to discuss with you, as I believe his absence was unplanned." Not that this class particularly lent itself to a strict syllabus but… "That being said, the Professor's absence leads well enough into a discussion on its own."

Yeul smiled. "Let us talk about change today. Any sort of change. Would you say you are different from whom you were a year ago? What changes have you made to your lives? What changes have you adapted to?" She spread her hands out and shrugged slightly, still smiling. "As per usual, if you do not wish to stay on topic, please do not feel you have to. Let's begin, shall we?"

"I come to class and he's not even here?" Cade made a face. "Figures."

She smiled at him. "I am sure he'd be pleased that you showed up," she said lightly.

"Yaaaay," Cade drawled sarcastically.

"I'm sorry he's not here to see your efforts," she said, unperturbed by the sarcasm. "Does that bother you?"

"Not really," Cade said with a shrug. "It's not like I schedule my life around Ender's approval of it."

"You do not strike me as the type," Yeul said agreeably. "Has your time gone well since we last talked?"

"Well, I've gotten more detention, gremlin bit, and a tattoo," Cade said, "so...about average?"

"I hesitate to ask what above-average would be for you," Yeul said, with a laugh.

"Jail?" Cade suggested.

"And how much time have you spent in one?" she wondered.

"There have been a few nights," Cade said with a "what can you do?" sort of shrug.

"And will likely be a few more?" she asked lightly. "I cannot say the same for me. My Guardian would find that distressing."

"I don't have a guardian," Cade said.

"Some people do not," Yeul said, nodding. "How much of a difference do you think one would have made to you?"

Well, he probably wouldn't be a deathstick addicted pirate who was familiar with jails?

"Not much."

Bay coiled around herself as she considered the question. "This would be a really, really long class if I explained everything that's happened in the last year," she said. "Let's just say my family is kind of insane. But -- I think the weirdest thing about change is how you almost never see it coming. The day before your life changes forever? It's just like any other day."

She was stealing something Daphne had told her, but somehow she didn't think Daphne would mind.

"That's a very interesting statement to make," Yeul said, nodding cheerfully at Bay. "Do you think it always holds true?"

"Not every single time," Bay admitted. "Like, if your life's going to change because you join the army or something, you probably knew the war was going on. But a lot of other stuff, like falling in love, or finding out a secret, or starting a new school -- that usually just falls out of the blue, yeah."

"Even in hindsight?" Yeul wondered.

"Maybe not in hindsight," Bay conceded. "But I wasn't really talking about how you feel about stuff down the road, more about what it's like right at that moment."

"And that's fine!" Yeul said, wanting to make that clear. "I just wondered if you thought it could apply in other times. It does make the most sense to speak of it in the present."

"I have...learned to deal with the strange and impossible? At least what is impossible in my world. I guess it's given me a broader perspective."

All of which she would use to crush the people that stood in her way.

"Do you think you've become more understanding of the things that were impossible?"

"Yeah, sure. I mean, the explanation itself is impossible in my own world, but if it works, it works," Emily said. It was easier than breaking her brain, really.

Who is, of course, willing.

So the world doesn't end on Yeul's watch.

(Even though it totally would.)
