Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Whoever worked their magic to ensure that the welcome picnics had nice weather had cut their mojo very close this time around. The weather was lovely today - sunny and hot enough to make it clear that summer in Fandom had finally begun - but the overnight thunderstorms had left puddles all over the lawn that hadn't quite dried up yet.

Still, the tables and chairs had managed to be scattered around, along with the buffet table of ~~moddable~~ food and drinks, and the information table with name tags, the Big and Little Sibling list, and the list of new roommates. The only thing missing was people to enjoy the festivities!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Oh, you have seen nothing yet." It was almost required of her to say that.

"It might have involved a portal. I happen to work for the company that works with the technology that lets people move from one...world, let's call it, to another, but sometimes they just appear out of the blue."

Emily smiled sympathetically. "Let's start from the beginning; how is your world like? I can point the main differences from there," Emily said, without knowing that might take a while.

"Technology," Snow said. The word was unfamiliar to her tongue. "It was a circle of blue light that brought me here. The magpies led me to it."

She was silent for a moment before she could answer Emily's question about her world. "When my father ruled, Tabor was a beautiful land," she said. "The fields would ripen with crops each fall, and the people were happy. But now that Queen Ravenna rules, the land is dead, and the people suffer. Even the castle is crumbling." Except for the walls-those had still been strong.

"Yeah...that sounds like a portal," Emily said as she listened to the rest. Alright, she had a lot of work ahead.

"Well, you're going to notice very soon things are different around here. For once, we have a lot of machines that make a lot of different things for us over here. It's mainly a lot of button pressing and level-pulling, don't worry. You're probably going to adapt in a little while anyway, and I can explain some of the less conventional stuff."

Was she being reassuring enough? Emily was so bad at this... "Then there's the other thing; this island is...weird. Weird by all definitions. Are you familiar with the concept of magic?" She had to explain it somehow, so that seemed like the best way to go around it.

"I've already seen that things are very different," Snow said. The food, the clothes, the way people talked. The lack of an evil queen ruling over them all.

"Magic I know." It wasn't common, but it wasn't unheard of, and she'd seen Ravenna's handiwork before she'd had to abandon Greta. "But machines? I don't know that word."

"Okay, just so you know, Fandom has some sort of strange magic. Sometimes people wake up without remembering who they are, or thinking they are someone else, or effectively as someone else. Sometimes weird things come to the island, or even take people from the island. It's never permanent, I think," added Emily hastily, because she didn't want to make it even worse. "But yes, a lot of weird things."

The other question though. "A machine is...like...think of it as a very complicated mechanism, um...like, I think you are probably familiar with the mechanism that you would use to close the gates of a castle, right? You could call that a really basic machine. The stuff we have here is several times more sophisticated, to say the least."

There was a lot of hand waving involved.

Snow tried to absorb this. She still wasn't sure why she was here, but the magpies had led her here for a reason, and she did have to prepare herself before she could confront Ravenna.

"It seems I have much to learn," she said slowly. "But if that is why I have been brought here, I'll do it."

"I honestly can't imagine why would someone end here...but the island seems to have a mind on its own at times. Maybe you needed protection?" Emily ventured, her brain three moves ahead.

"I was imprisoned in a tower for the past ten years by my stepmother," Snow admitted slowly. "I just escaped. I need to win my kingdom back."

Emily sighed heavily, hands on her hips, before answering. Trapped. Ten years? She didn't look like she was lying, and it would be a ridiculous lie. Suddenly it felt like she had been given a bit too much responsibility, as little as big siblings were actually asked to do.

"Then stick around until you feel you're ready. I'll do everything in my power to help you. Well, everything in my power before I turn into a huge bother to you, that is."

"Thank you," Snow said, smiling at Emily. "You are very kind. I hope I don't trouble you too much with my questions."

"I know how it is," Emily said, slowly. "To be trapped. For years. It's not something I talk about, and I would appreciate if you don't tell anyone. But- yeah, I can at least imagine how it was for you."

Emily then patted Snow on the shoulder, tentatively. "Please, bother me as much as you want."
