Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Whoever worked their magic to ensure that the welcome picnics had nice weather had cut their mojo very close this time around. The weather was lovely today - sunny and hot enough to make it clear that summer in Fandom had finally begun - but the overnight thunderstorms had left puddles all over the lawn that hadn't quite dried up yet.

Still, the tables and chairs had managed to be scattered around, along with the buffet table of ~~moddable~~ food and drinks, and the information table with name tags, the Big and Little Sibling list, and the list of new roommates. The only thing missing was people to enjoy the festivities!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I'll make a request at the office first thing Monday," Jessica vowed.

"I appreciate that. It'll make my transition here so much easier."

"Well, at least this part of the transition," Jessica said. "The ponies and the time travel and all that is going to be their own deal."

"Well, at least I have some warning. Anything else I might need to know?"

"What, all of that wasn't enough for your first few minutes in Fandom?" Jessica joked. "No, you seem reasonably adaptable. I'm confident you'll survive here without too much trouble."

"But, if you need absolutely anything, I'm on the fifth floor of the dorms, room 503. And here," she said, pulling a card out of her pocket, "is my cell number. I always have it on me. Call whenever."

"Oh," Raven said, looking at the card. ". . . What's a cell?"

The clothes. The politeness. The not knowing what a cell was. "You're from the past, aren't you? I knew there was something I was missing about you," Jessica said as she pulled her cell phone out of her pocket. "A cell phone is a portable phone. Most of the people here have them."

"The other girl on the bus said her world was done with the Cold War," Raven said. "I didn't realize this world was ahead, too. That's amazing!" She stared down at the phone. "Does it work by radio? How'd they make it so small?"

Yeah, alternate universes and future kids didn't get much more than a blink -- being from a Marvel universe made things like alternate universes way too easy to swallow, really -- but a cell phone?

Mind = blown.

"Welcome to the distant future, Raven. It's 2013. The Cold War ended decades ago. And we're really good at making electronics these days," Jessica said.

"That's sixty years!" Raven stared some more. ". . . Why aren't we living on the moon, then? The bus didn't even fly."

"We stopped going to the moon a while ago, but we're sending robots to Mars these days," Jessica said. "And flying cars never got off the ground. It's a shame."

"Why would we stop going to the moon?" Come on, future! Where were your priorities?!

"The short answer is 'money,' the long answer is 'I have no clue, but it involves money,'" Jessica said.

"Sometimes, every now and then?" Raven glanced around, as though McCarthy was going to come leaping out of a bush at her when she finished this statement. "I think the Communists might not be totally wrong about everything."

Money stopped people from going to the moon. That was just wrong.

"Don't worry, you can speak openly about that stuff here. College students all over the country go way farther than you just did and the worst trouble they get in is someone telling them to shut up because it's distracting them from doing a keg stand," Jessica said. "The times have changed in a lot of ways."

Talk openly about things? That might take some practice.

"That does explain why no one's wearing gloves or hats," she said. "And is that why I've been assigned to live with a boy?"

That was pretty beyond modern, right there.

"I think that's usually because somebody in the office is either drunk or thinks they're funny," Jessica said. Both were probably true of the RNG. "But it's a common enough thing here. My roommate is a boy and he hasn't been a problem. Except for being moody. And sometimes stumbling in drunk. But he's a unique case with a lot of that."

"Well, I don't think I'll be writing home about that bit." Mostly because Charles would give her hell for it. "He seemed nice enough, at least. And I am used to having my brother around at home, so it won't be too hard, I think."

The girl/boy part definitely wasn't the most frustrating part of her having a roommate, no. That would be making sure he didn't see her go blue when her guard was down.

"If he does give you any problems, let me know. I can be persuasive when I want to be," Jessica said. "Who did you end up with, anyway?"

"His name is Theo? I think he might be new, too. He said he's from California, then told me I needed sunscreen."

Because apparently in the future, the sun could kill you. Good to know.

"You don't have sunscreen in your time?" Jessica asked. "Yeah, definitely a good thing to have. I like this kid already.."

"I've heard of it, I think? But no one uses any, at least not when they're not in the army. If you don't want the sun on your face, you wear a hat."

"This is already more than I ever knew about sunscreen throughout history," Jessica noted. "I'm not being sarcastic when I say that this is oddly interesting to find out."

[OOC: I must pass out! I made it longer than I thought I would, though. Night!]

"Well, I guess I can help with history lessons, then." How weird was that? Her life was history. "At least until 1953."
