Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Whoever worked their magic to ensure that the welcome picnics had nice weather had cut their mojo very close this time around. The weather was lovely today - sunny and hot enough to make it clear that summer in Fandom had finally begun - but the overnight thunderstorms had left puddles all over the lawn that hadn't quite dried up yet.

Still, the tables and chairs had managed to be scattered around, along with the buffet table of ~~moddable~~ food and drinks, and the information table with name tags, the Big and Little Sibling list, and the list of new roommates. The only thing missing was people to enjoy the festivities!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

So Ben was a teacher now (thanks, Portalocity, for that). In deference to his new position, he was not trying to eat the entire buffet today, but he definitely had a plateful of treats he hadn't seen a lot of on Shakespeare.

Mmm, processed food.

"Ben! The hell are you still doing here?" Tony was a loving friend. You could tell.

"We're stuck," Ben groused. "Stupid Portalocity. So Ender and I are teaching for the summer while they remove their heads from their asses."

Tony gave him a sympathetic pat on the shoulder. "At least you guys didn't get separated."

"Hadn't even thought of that," Ben said with a wince. "Things are suddenly looking up. You staying for the summer?"

Because time with Tony was always good.

"Yeah, gotta spend time earning money for college." Who did that?

Ben blinked. "Earning money?" he repeated.

Was that something Tony had ever done before?

"Yeah, turns out I've got a few more enemies in the business arena than I thought before. Stark International has been acquired by Hammer Multinational two freakin' days before I graduated."

Ben winced. "Sorry, man," he said sincerely. "How are you going to get them back?"

Because he knew Tony.

Tony sighed. "At the moment? My lawyer is picking away at the deal because somehow it also included the trust fund set up for me."

"They took all of it?" Ben looked stunned.

"Yup, I'm officially poor." Tony didn't even know what poor was, damn it. "But I got a job doing engineering work for a few companies Mr. Rogers said were okay."

And not going to kill him.

"Well, keeping busy is always good," Ben offered.

Especially if it won't kill you.

They had special lives.

"Plus, it'll give me time to come up with my own ideas before I start school again."

True story 'I'm Tony Stark' got you in at MIT after the application period was over.

"Where are you going?" Ben asked, pretending like he knew the first thing about colleges on Earth.

DAMN IT, BEN.

"MIT. It's... yeah. I hadn't planned on it. But no one can say I'm not qualified for my job with a few degrees."

"Are you going to crack them over the heads with your diploma?" Ben guessed.

"Well, duh. And then I'll lord my education over them for the entire conversation."

Clint wasn't sure how he'd let himself get talked into this buddy thing - he wasn't that experienced, was he? - but he put on a smile when he spotted Ben and figured he could fake it if needed. "Hey. Is the food good this time around?" he asked.

"Always," Ben said with a grin. "I'm Ben."

"Clint Barton," he said cordially. "I think I'm supposed to help you get acclimated to the island?"

It was just weird with him being, you know, younger than expected.

"I graduated last summer," Ben said with a smile, "and spent four years here before that. I think I'm okay."

Okay, that earned Ben a much more respectful look. "Seriously? And you're coming back?" he asked. "To the land of getting randomly turned into things you're not?"

"It wasn't entirely part of the plan," Ben admitted. "Ender and I came in for graduation and then Portalocity screwed up and can't get us back home for months."

"Oh geez, that sucks," Clint said sympathetically. "Where's home?" He was assuming it wasn't somewhere close if they had to use Portalocity.
