Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Whoever worked their magic to ensure that the welcome picnics had nice weather had cut their mojo very close this time around. The weather was lovely today - sunny and hot enough to make it clear that summer in Fandom had finally begun - but the overnight thunderstorms had left puddles all over the lawn that hadn't quite dried up yet.

Still, the tables and chairs had managed to be scattered around, along with the buffet table of ~~moddable~~ food and drinks, and the information table with name tags, the Big and Little Sibling list, and the list of new roommates. The only thing missing was people to enjoy the festivities!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

This marked Jack's second picnic as a teacher; any more of these, and he'd start feeling like quite the old hand. He took some muffins and fruit and watched the people mill about, trying to suss out who (if any) among the newcomers might be more interesting than usual.

Which would be when Derek slunk on over. Because Jack was okay to talk to out of all this crowd. "What are you teaching this time?"

"Parlour games," Jack answered, with a tiny smile. "Charades, card games, singalongs ... basically anything that doesn't require a glowing screen."

He felt about a thousand years old every time he explained it.

"Board games?" He could get behind that. Because you couldn't use werewolf enhanced reflexes there.

Jack shrugged. "Probably. Hadn't picked one out, but it fits with the theme."

He added. "And ... I thought you weren't teaching?"

Derek just sighed. "Try telling that to Pinkie Pie."

"Ah." There really wasn't much to add to that besides a sympathetic look. Jack was actually fairly amused by the situation, but laughing seemed unkind.

"Arts and crafts." And glitter! Don't forget the glitter!

Now Jack couldn't help a smile. "That's ... very classic summer camp, isn't it? Will there be lanyards?"

The glitter went without saying.

"Shut up," Derek said with a shove at Jack's shoulder that could be considered friendly.

"Or what? You'll sic the pony on me?" Jack asked, with his own friendly shove.

"I might. She's vicious."

"Is it sad I can believe that?" Jack asked. "They say it's always the nice ones."

After a little while of awkwarding around like an awkward person, Bruce stopped in front of the first other adult-looking person he saw - that'd be you, Jack - and in a low voice, inquired, "Hey, do you know if this whole thing is mandatory, or...?"

Shut up, okay? He wasn't good at this kind of social thing.

"It's Fandom," Jack said briefly. "Nothing here is mandatory -- except maybe not killing any students, and I'm sure we've forgiven that once or twice. I take it the picnic's not quite your kind of scene?"

"It's a little intense," Bruce said carefully. "I was expecting..." He shook his head and chuckled lightly. "Well, I don't know what. Maybe a classroom to set up in and directions to a hotel. Definitely less free food."

"I don't think anyone ever expects this much free food," Jack told him. "And we'll get to the classrooms soon enough, but we like to have a big party at the start of every semester. Probably to prove there's still going to be free food."

That wasn't serious.

"And to think I was planning on spending the summer somewhere without running water," Bruce remarked wryly. "This is definitely different."

It was surreal, was what it was. Closer to the lavish conditions in Tony's place than anywhere Bruce went to do work these days.

"I'm Bruce, by the way."

"Jack," Jack returned, offering his hand. "How'd you end up here and not ... wherever there isn't running water that you wanted to go?"

"A... friend decided to matchmake me with a job he thought would be good for me," Bruce settled on. "Though I'm starting to think he just wanted the confused text-messages."

Because really.

"What brings you here? You are teaching, right?" He'd mentioned a classroom, but Bruce wanted to make sure.

"I am, but mostly this is just where I live," Jack said -- the first time he'd admitted that. "I came to finish high school and have never quite managed to leave. And now they've given me a classroom."

"Congratulations," Bruce said wryly. "That's some significant alumni staying power."

"It wasn't my life plan, but so far it's working," Jack said. "What does your ... friend have you teaching?"

"Kind of a mix between medicine and first-aid?" It was going to be such a party up in his class. Except not really. "Apparently the students here could use it, and the curriculum here doesn't call for a nuclear physics class, which is my actual specialty, so..." He shrugged. "How about you?"

"It's definitely not nuclear physics," Jack said. He wasn't intimidated, exactly, but modern science was beyond him. "Well ... this term I'm teaching a class called parlour games, and last term it was on supernatural studies. But my actual field is going to be law, if I ever graduate."
