Speech Comm

CJ looks smitten, and the fact that she's reading the school paper only makes it worse.

301--3rd period

Still on family, gang. Being here, at this school, you've formed bonds. I would like a six degrees diagram of your closest relationships, followed by theirs followed by theirs. This will wind up looking like a mind map, but it's really useful in persuasive communication when you understand who knows who and how to push those big, threatening buttons. Start now, you'll probably want to list people. The whole thing, artfully done, will be due Monday.

401--5th period

I'm so glad none of you feel a need to hold back in this class. That's good. I love that you express yourselves. Now...I have the video of the SotU, and we're going to watch it. Because i am a benevolent despot, we're watching it on mute. Jump in at any point and comment on the nonverbals. Gestures, expressions, body language, both positive and negative.

Maia signed in and started thinking about how her friends were 6 degrees seperated.

Shep comes flying in about 8 minutes late. His computer backpack is in one hand, a small animal carrier in the other.

"Don't worry, she's not contagious, but I had to bring her to the NPC vet this morning and I didn't have time to get her back to the dorm before class. She won't bother us."

"It's much better without sound," Elizabeth said innocently, before ruining the innocent facade by mocking Bush and pointing out everything he did wrong.

Allie chuckled because she agreed.

"He doesn't have a lot of poise for the so-called leader of the free world," she added.

"I bet the network executives must be mad that they've got to give over programing to him each year for this farce," Elizabeth snickered, as she watched him continue to make faces. She wished she had popcorn she could throw at the screen.

"I wonder how many people that voted to re-elect him were bashing their heads off the nearest wall while watching this," Allie said.

Re: 401

"Alas, probably not as many as we'd like," Elizabeth sighed.

"At least he can't run again in 2008."

Re: 401

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-02-16 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Even though he's not president in my reality, I am still so thankful for that," Elizabeth nodded. "Let's just hope he doesn't accidently press the nu-ku-lar button in the next two years."

Re: 401

[identity profile] allie-cameron.livejournal.com 2006-02-16 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Allie giggled at Elizabeth's mocking of his pronunciation of the word nuclear. "I hope your president is better," she said. "And if he is, can I come back to your reality?"

Re: 401

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-02-16 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth nodded. "Hayes is a good sort," she said. "The vice-president wasn't exactly someone you wanted in any position of power, but he was forced to resign only a few weeks into the term."

She grinned. "If I knew how all this reality converging worked, and we could pick and choose where we went, sure!"

Re: 401

[identity profile] allie-cameron.livejournal.com 2006-02-16 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
"They always seem to pick the most incompetent fools as vice presidents," Allie pondered. "I sometimes wonder if the only reason no one has tried to assassinate Bush is because Cheney would be worse."

Then she laughed. "Oh, my brain hurts trying to figure out how that stuff works. So I won't even try."

Re: 401

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-02-16 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
"I think vice-presidents tend to be chosen as running mates because of their economic, or strategic importance," Elizabeth said. "Often you'll find that the president is from the north, and the V-P from the south, or vice-versa for the geographical spread."

She grinned. "Same here. I tend to leave the science to others. Especially quantum physics. Or even just plain physics!"

Re: 401

[identity profile] allie-cameron.livejournal.com 2006-02-16 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
"That's probably a good political strategy," Allie admitted. "But not necessarily what's best for the country." She shrugged. "Oh well, term limits, right?"

"I like science, but all the interdimensional stuff is beyond me. I'm finally getting used to the idea that my roommate is dead and that's a big step."

Re: 401

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-02-16 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, they're good when you've got a bad adminstration, but bad when you've got a good one though," Elizabeth shrugged. "Still, I'd rather limit the good so we can limit the bad too."

Elizabeth looked at her, curiously. "Who are you rooming with?" she asked.

Re: 401

[identity profile] allie-cameron.livejournal.com 2006-02-16 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Allie nodded.

"Lilly Kane. Do you know her?"

Re: 401

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-02-16 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
"No, I don't actually." Apparently the "Colorado Crowd" didn't completely corner the market on resurrections.

"I'm surprised. She's kind of... outgoing. She was dating Rover, the old head of security."

Re: 401

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-02-16 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, yes. Gotcha now," Elizabeth nodded. "So, she's dead. Huh."

Re: 401

[identity profile] allie-cameron.livejournal.com 2006-02-16 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Yep," she said. After a pause, she added, "And I wonder what it means about me that saying that doesn't seem weird to me anymore after some of the other things I've seen and heard here."

Re: 401

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-02-16 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth giggled. "I know what you mean. Strange has been redefined since I came to Fandom."

Re: 401

[identity profile] allie-cameron.livejournal.com 2006-02-16 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
"That's quite the understatement."

"It really is. And yet, still bad. Least this way we know it's not entirely the fault of his speechwriters. He just looks confused half the time and that's not the way to inspire confidence."

"I guess looking kind of dumb could be on purpose. Makes you seem like just a regular guy, and maybe gets people to like you more because they can relate to you."
