Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of tables and chairs scattered around the lawn for anyone who wanted to sit down once they'd had their fill of the buffet, or to recover from starting to find out what this place was all about. No one would judge the need to take a mental breather.

Some of the tables were out in the open, for those who weren't allergic to the sun, and some of the tables were in the shade, or far from the rest of the crowd. Wherever people decided to rest, there was space enough for everyone.

[OCD is up! This is the post for general mingling! Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Congratulations. You win for best entrance," Jessica said. "I wish I had a trophy to give you, but the best I have is a half empty bottle of water."

See? She held it up and everything.

"Thank you," Snow said, still uncertain. "I am not entirely sure how I got here. The magpies led me to a circle of light, and then I was here, at this school."

"I would jokingly suggest 'magic,' but when you bring up magpies and circles of light, I think it stops being a joke," Jessica said. "This probably means you don't have any school supplies, huh?"

Snow shook her head. "I do not," she said. "Do you know where I would get them?"

Paying for them would be the next problem.

"Well, if you brought your wallet through the shiny light portal, Turtle & Canary sells everything you'd need," Jessica said. "But I doubt the summer classes are going to focus a ton on book learning, and the first week's going to be introductions anyway, so I vote winging it. By the way, I'm Jessica. Nice to meet you."

"I am Snow White," Snow said, dipping into a curtsy. "I am from the kingdom of Tabor. It is nice to meet you, too. What land are you from?"

"The Relatively Newer City of York," Jessica said. "Which I don't necessarily need to catch a portal to reach, but it's fun to do so when it works smoothly."

"I do not know that city," Snow said. "What kingdom does it lie in?"

"The Relatively Newer State of... Actually, no, I'm going to stop because it'll keep going all day if I keep answering like that," Jessica said. "New York City is in the state of New York, which is almost 300 miles north of here, in America. No kingdoms involved. Just republics."

Republic! She knew what that was, from what she'd been taught of the history of other realms when she was a child. Still, "America" was an unfamiliar country.

"So this place is in the Republic of America?" she said. "I'm sorry I have so many questions. This is all so very strange to me."

"You're fresh off the boat, questions are going to happen," Jessica said, waving the concern off. "It's the United States of America. And we're on a planet called Earth." Yeah, she was probably asking for more questions with that one.

"I've never heard of any of these places," Snow said. But she'd been without news of the outside world for a long time, so she had no idea how much things might have changed.

"I think I'm very far from home," she said. "Even the way you are dressed is strange to me." Her words didn't come with any hint of criticism; she'd just never seen modern clothing before.

"Judging by the portal, I'm assuming you're in a completely different universe," Jessica said. "I'm sure you'll be able to travel back, but here? Tambor isn't even a place on a map." She got the name wrong. Apparently she was thinking about shows that would be returning with a new season on Netflix very soon. "So things are going to be a little different than what you're used to."

"I think I welcome the difference, and learning about it," Snow said. "I spent the last ten years of my life trapped in a tower. As strange as this place is, at least I am free."

"Well, that's a terrible way to spend ten years," Jessica said sympathetically. "Fandom's a huge improvement. We may have towers in the school, but they're easy to get out of and if you can't, it's probably just that the door knob is messed up, but that's easily fixed."

"How long have you been here?" Snow asked. "Was it as confusing for you?"

"Almost a year," Jessica said. "And it was an adjustment, but my home world is a lot like this one, only way more messed up. So there was a reasonable comfort level."

"Did you come here knowingly, or was it unexpected for you, too?" Snow said. She was rapidly learning that not everyone was brought here by helpful magpies.

"No, I was as prepared to come to Fandom as someone can possibly be," Jessica said. "And by that, I mean I knew I was coming here but I had no idea it would be kind of crazyflakes."

"Crazyflakes?" Snow said. Jessica, you used such strange words! Were there flakes of crazy here that had to be avoided?

"You'll learn quickly that the easiest way to deal with me when I say something that sounds crazy is to just pretend it made some kind of sense," Jessica said. "I have very good friends who do that, I won't take offense."

Snow laughed. "I had diplomacy lessons when I was very young," she said. "It sounds the same."
