Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of tables and chairs scattered around the lawn for anyone who wanted to sit down once they'd had their fill of the buffet, or to recover from starting to find out what this place was all about. No one would judge the need to take a mental breather.

Some of the tables were out in the open, for those who weren't allergic to the sun, and some of the tables were in the shade, or far from the rest of the crowd. Wherever people decided to rest, there was space enough for everyone.

[OCD is up! This is the post for general mingling! Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

She had to ask. "Why pictures of condoms?"

"To show how cool and rebellious they thought they were, I think," Gert offered. "And rub it in the administration's faces that the kids were in charge and they weren't. Sort of a crappy plan, because it ended up with the cops coming and dragging us all out, so..."

"Did it actually work?" she asked. "Because if so, Hollywood needs to make a movie."

"No news yet," Gert shrugged. "I doubt it, though. Also, if they made a movie, it'd have to be mostly in ASL, 'cause it was a deaf school, and I don't see a lot of studios lining up to do that."

"They'd probably change that part," Maddie said honestly. "It'd all get lost in the adaptation. Except for maybe one deaf kid so no one complains."

"Pretty much," Gert agreed. "Probably one who went deaf in, like, middle school, so they can justify him still talking out loud with barely any accent."

"There's an accent?" See, Maddie didn't even know these things.

"Apparently there is," Gert confirmed. "If the kids at Carlton were anything to go by, I mean. I didn't know that before."

She paused. "It's weird the kind of stuff you end up learning, going to school on a multidimensional nexus."

Maddie paused here. "I'm pretty sure most of what I've learned here would have been pretty normal when I learned it at home," she admitted.

"Right. Superhero school." The topics of education there were probably pretty diverse. "Well, now you can add deaf accents to the list. Also, dino-sitting."

"I... sort of kind of knew how to dino-sit before?" Maddie said. "Superhero school."

"Right." Well. "Maybe I should have audited that class in middle school. Would've come in handy."

Which was about the nicest thing she'd ever say about an institution designed to produce superheroes, yup.

"Oh, well, it wasn't really a class as much as my friend turned into a dinosaur," Maddie said. "Fighting with a T-rex? Kinda different."

"'With' as in 'alongside' or 'against'?" Gert wanted to know. "Against would be pretty miserable."

"Alongside. I've watched the people fighting against him... not always much of a fight," she said.

"Well, yeah. Dinosaurs do have that effect," Gert admitted. And now a napping Old Lace was on the receiving end of some scritches, oh yes she was. "It sounds like your friend's powers are pretty cool."
