Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of tables and chairs scattered around the lawn for anyone who wanted to sit down once they'd had their fill of the buffet, or to recover from starting to find out what this place was all about. No one would judge the need to take a mental breather.

Some of the tables were out in the open, for those who weren't allergic to the sun, and some of the tables were in the shade, or far from the rest of the crowd. Wherever people decided to rest, there was space enough for everyone.

[OCD is up! This is the post for general mingling! Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

It turned out that picnics were a pretty fascinating place for an eighty-second-century genetically-engineered dinosaur, because Old Lace wanted to sniff all the people.

Like Theo, for instance, who Old Lace approached snout-first, nice and slowly, with Gert standing right beside her and disclaiming, "Yes, she's a dinosaur, but she's friendly so don't freak out."

Theo wasn't freaking out. He was looking at the dinosaur with wide eyes and some fascination but he wasn't freaking out. So, that was something.

"I thought they were extinct," he finally said, still peering down at the dinosaur. "Have science classes lied to me all this time?"

"They make a comeback," Gert shared, scritching Old Lace's neck affectionately. "My parents were time-travelers. You can see some of these coming to an arid climate near you as soon as the eighty-second century."

Okay, maybe she really liked telling people that. It was fun!

"You can pet her if you want," she offered. "I'm Gert, by the way."

"This place certainly is...interesting," Ange said in what was the understatement of the century so far.

Theo scratched the side of his head, slightly shell-shocked.

"Theo. I probably won't be alive in the eighty second century," he added as an afterthought. "I don't think healthcare's gonna be that good."

"Yeah, I'm not holding my breath either," Gert said. "Maybe a time machine'll hit the market first if you're looking to get yourself a new pet, but otherwise they're probably not gonna be too popular anytime soon."

Which was sad, because everything was better with dinosaurs.

"Where're you from?"

Before answering the question, Theo reached down towards the dinosaur with a few fingers so she could sniff them. He was a little cautious but it was his firs encounter with a dinosaur since...ever.

"Santa Monica," he answered, looking up. "So, whole other side of the country."

"Oh, I'm from LA too," Gert said, as Old Lace bent her head to give Theo's fingers a cautious sniff. She seemed to think he was an acceptable sort, if the lack of sudden biting or mauling was anything to go by. "Los Feliz. Probably not your version, though, unless yours has tons of superheroes and stuff."

Theo shook his head. "Only superheroes we have are the kind that get paid to pretend they're superheroes."

So, actors and actresses, mostly.

"And a lot of them aren't even good at that."

"Well, that's something they have in common with the real ones," Gert offered with a smirk. "In my world they're a bunch of sanctimonious grown-ups who only think they know their shit, so they're probably even less competent than the fake ones."

"There a real need for a lot of superheroes where you're from?" Theo asked, curious. "I hope they wouldn't all just be out of work and fighting each other to solve purse snatchings and stuff."

"You're not far off," Gert said uncharitably, but that wasn't really fair. "There's bad guys too, but a lot of the time the big-name heroes are just running around getting involved with truancy issues and petty crap like that." Could you tell what her thoughts were? "Far as I'm concerned, the worlds without them are probably better off, so lucky you."

"They sound bored," Theo remarked. "They could try getting real jobs? They always seem to be hiring telemarketers."

Mitchell had tried a job like that once. He'd lasted a week.

Gert snorted. "Or construction workers, to replace the buildings the heroes are responsible for ruining," she chimed in. "Some of them should move over to that industry."

"Why don't they all, I dunno, relocate to a place that needs them?" Theo asked.

"Your guess is as good as mine," Gert told him frankly. "Congested cities full of powered people is not a good system, but no one asked me."

She shrugged.

"So what's your world like?" Pause. "I've been here a while now, and that still sounds like a pretty weird question."

"Pretty normal, I guess."

Kind of. There were some...eccentricities but Theo wasn't sure if he was supposed to go talking about Ange and Dev and Perspecta. He'd have to ask later.

"No superheroes. No castles doubling as schools either. It's hot in the summer and hot in the winter and the beach is nice."

"So, basically an L.A.," Gert summed up. "Cool. I guess."

"This is the first time I've been to the other coast," Theo told her, glancing around. It didn't seem too different but he knew he was on one small island and couldn't judge.

"You like it out here?" Theo asked.

Gert paused. "More than LA, I guess," she admitted. "It wouldn't be my first choice of places to be, but at least there's seasons, and the people here aren't as douchey as at other high schools."

Oversharing? Maybe.

"You excited for preppy East Coast boarding school, or...?"

"I'm not unexcited?" Theo tried, shrugging a shoulder. "I don't know what I am. I miss my friends and my school wasn't awful. But, I like new experiences. Maybe this'll be more relaxing than I originally thought."

"It might?" Gert offered, because coming from a certain kind of world, the predictability of the weirdness here could actually be sort of comforting. "It might also keep you on your toes or make you run screaming. Sort of a toss-up."

"Do people tend to run screaming from this place?" Theo had to ask because, well, she'd mentioned it. "Is that common?"

"There's definitely running and screaming within the place," Gert offered. "I don't know about 'from,' but we were pretty recently temporarily relocated to a dungeon full of stuff that attacked us. There was a good amount of stuff making people scream and run around in there."

Sorry, Theo. She didn't really believe in sugar-coating things.

All righty, then.

"This place doesn't sound safe at all," Ange said, sounding concerned. She shook her head.

"And Perspecta is?" Dev chimed in. "Theo did just fine there. What's so different about this place?"

"Dungeons, Dev!" Ange pointed out.

"They're just giant playgrounds," Dev said.

"Uh huh," Theo said, not sure how to respond to that. "Well, that's...not nice, of course. But, good to know, maybe? I'd hate to be caught totally off guard."

Bullies were looking so mild to Theo right now.

"Sorry, I just gave this same speech to my fake little sibling here," Gert admitted a little sheepishly. "But if something weird happens again, which it probably will, you at least know someone who can provide dinosaur backup?"
