Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of tables and chairs scattered around the lawn for anyone who wanted to sit down once they'd had their fill of the buffet, or to recover from starting to find out what this place was all about. No one would judge the need to take a mental breather.

Some of the tables were out in the open, for those who weren't allergic to the sun, and some of the tables were in the shade, or far from the rest of the crowd. Wherever people decided to rest, there was space enough for everyone.

"It's a school," Cade said. "There's free food?"

That was the part that had made him happiest when he'd first arrived.

Her stomach rumbled at the mention of food. She had no idea how long it had been since she'd eaten, and when she had, it had just been the tasteless porridge she'd been fed day in, day out.

"Food?" she repeated, more eagerly than she'd meant to.

Cade nodded, smiling a little. "This way," he said, leading her to the table. "You have take whatever you want. They don't care."

Snow didn't even attempt to hide how she practically dove on the fresh fruit, grabbing an apple in one hand and a pear in the other. She'd devoured half the apple, a look of near ecstasy on her face, before she remembered herself and gave Cade a sheepish look. "I'm sorry," she said. "I haven't had fruit in years."

Cade smiled. "Don't worry about it," he said. "Just stay away from the scary orange colored chips. They'll stain your fingers for days."

She spotted what he was talking about; they looked strange and not like real food, but strangely compelling all the same. There were actually a lot of items on the table she'd never seen before.

"What is this place?" she said again. "You said there was a school? Who rules in this castle?" She couldn't help but notice they were right outside what seemed to be one.

"The castle is the school," Cade said. "It's run by--" he glanced around until he found Zoe, "--her. She's not a queen or an empress or a governor or anything. Just the principal. Rumor has it she's a pretty good shot, though."

"Principal," Snow repeated. It sounded close enough to prince or princess, at least, even if Cade said she wasn't royalty.

"A good shot? With a bow?"

She had a lot to learn.

Cade chuckled. "With a blaster," he said. "A gun?" he added.

Snow shook her head. "I do not know what those words mean," she said.

"You'll figure it out," he assured her, grabbing a piece of cake. "Weapons are a big thing here."

"I need to learn to fight," Snow said solemnly. Maybe that's what she was here to learn.

And if Cade was going to have some cake, Snow was going to help herself to some as well. Her eyes rolled back as she took her first bite. "This is the best cake I have ever tasted," she said.

"Then you're definitely in the right place," Cade said. "For cake and fighting. If you look through the refrigerators in the common rooms--big white things full of cold food--you'll always find some cake tucked in the back somewhere."

Wait until she discovered ice cream.

"This place sounds too good to be true," Snow said. "Like magic."

She could move into Chilly Boulder with Ben Skywalker!

"Well, it has its downsides too," Cade said, thinking of the dungeon week, "but the food isn't part of it."

"What do you mean by downsides?" Snow had to ask, worried for a moment that Ravenna or Finn could follow her here.

Cade tried to come up with an example that wouldn't send her off screaming.

"I spent a weekend as a woman once," he tried.

...and now he sounded like a weird cross-dresser. Good job, Cade.

Snow stared. "Dressing as one?" she said, not quite comprehending. She wasn't judging, either.

Cade shook his head. "Becoming one. Most of the guys did."

"Was it sorcery?" Snow asked, eyes wide. "Someone cast a spell to turn the men into women?" That sounded like something Ravenna might do.

"I don't think so," Cade said. "Most people just shrug and go 'Fandom thing' like this stuff happens all the karking time..."

"Karking?" Snow said. She could grasp what it mean in context, but she'd never heard the word before. People spoke so strangely here.

"Fucking?" Cade offered helpfully.

Snow shook her head. Look, she was a sheltered princess for the first six years of her life, then stuck in a tower for the next decade.

"I have a lot to learn," she said.

"I'd be happy to teach you how to curse," Cade said. "I'm fluent in about twelve languages."
