Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2013, Early Saturday Evening [Part 1]

The ceremony was set for right after sunset, to make sure all types of guests could safely attend, and the lawn of the school had been lit up with blue and gold lights, creating safe paths in which to walk to the seating area and giving everything a twinkling, serene appearance.

Of course, the staff could hardly remember the last time graduation had been a serene experience and so their smiles were genuine but their eyes were alert to anything that could go wrong. The folding chairs had been cleaned of any of last year's drop bear residue and when the scene was perfect, the guests were welcomed in.

Congratulations, Class of 2013! All you have left to do is get through the ceremony. No problem, right?

"It's good to be back for a couple days. Fandom hasn't been too rough on you recently, has it?" Bruce asked.

Oh, Bruce. You knew nothing of the past month. Such wonderful ignorance.

Rilla chewed on her lower lip. "Well, we're all fine now," she answered carefully.

Bruce gave Rilla's reaction a moment's consideration. "I think I'll ask again sometime after the ceremony. I don't want to bring down what should be a happy occasion."

Rilla nodded, looking grateful. "Thank you. It was a fairly trying week."

"The important thing is that you and Jims came out of it okay," Bruce said. "And probably a little stronger for haing survived it."

"Well, I also increased my classmates' tolerance to toddler screaming," Rilla said dryly. "I'm not sure they'll thank me for it."

"No, but they're going to complain about it less here at school," Bruce said. "That has to count for something."

"True," Rilla agreed with a little laugh. "And truly, Jims is an easy, agreeable baby as long as he's properly fed."

"I don't know about anyone else, but I never had a problem with him," Bruce said. "Although you never asked me to babysit. That might have changed things."

Let's face it. If Bruce ever had to watch Jims for as much as four hours, he'd be wearing a cape and hitting bad guys RIGHT NOW.

Bruce or Jims? Because Jims would be the most adorable Robin ever.

"Well, I never really had anywhere to go," Rilla admitted.

Jims, naturally. Tiny Canadian Robins were just adorable by nature.

"You could find places in Fandom if you really needed a night off," Bruce said. "But it's to your credit that you haven't felt a strong enough need to find that out for yourself. Not a lot of people in your position would show that much responsibility."

"I thought it just meant I was practically a shut-in," Rilla said. "I get time off when I go home and Susan will let me out for evenings. Jims is normally very good about sleeping from seven until seven."

"I know from experience how important having a strong figure watching over you can be to a child in adverse situations," Bruce said. "You should take nights off when you can, but don't be hard on yourself for not doing it more often. Because everything that you're doing is helping him more than you can imagine."

Rilla blushed. "Thank you, Bruce."

"Thank you, Rilla, on behalf of orphans and the like everywhere," Bruce said.

Rilla gave him a swift kiss on the cheek. "But I'm not planning to raise another orphan after Jims."

"One is more than enough. We're something of a handful," Bruce admitted.

"I can't imagine you being anything but beautifully behaved," Rilla said with a smile.

"If Alfred were here right now, he'd probably have a few stories to tell you," Bruce said. "Once he stopped laughing."

"Perhaps I should send him some cookies to butter him up," Rilla said mischievously. "I, naturally, was a very well-behaved child and I shall never let you near my relatives for you to learn differently."

"I believe you," Bruce joked. "But you can expect me to be here when you graduate to see if you can actually keep me away."

"I just won't tell you who my relatives are," Rilla decided. "So there."

They'd be the ones holding Jims, Rilla.

"You should also make sure they change their style of dress, accents, don't cheer for you, and aren't watching Jims," Bruce pointed out. "All of that is probably going to be somewhat distinctive."

Rilla's cheeks went pink. "That can all be arranged!"

Not really, no.

"I can't wait to see what you come up with to pull that off," Bruce said.
