Jack looked slightly smug and more than slightly rumpled as he dashed into class today.

“Right,” he said. “I apologize for last week. This week I’ll try not to blurt out every thought that passes through my skull. Which is for the best.” No one needed to know what was in Jack’s head right then.

“We’re discussing djinn,” he continued. “Genies, in the vernacular. In Islamic tradition, they are immortal invisible spirits made of fire who have free will and can be good, bad, or in between – just like people. There’s even a tradition of personal djinn, known as qarīn, who pass along evil suggestions – think of them like guardian angels in reverse, or like the devil on your shoulder.”

“But in popular culture, djinn are known almost entirely for getting trapped in bottles and granting wishes upon their release. They usually subvert the wish in some way – for example, wish for your own weight in gold and it may fall from the sky and crush you. Typically stories like that end with the wisher, if he or she is benevolent, either wishing the genie free or wishing to undo all their previous wishes and returning to normal life, sadder but wiser.”

“Today, we’re watching an episode of a television series that tells a story exactly like that. When it’s over, we’ll discuss what we would do with three wishes.”

And then he pressed play on the DVD.

Zeela was practically humming inside Sholeh's head. ::What's got you so happy?:: Sholeh asked, irritated. She was not in anywhere near as good a mood as her sister. ::And why are you hovering so close to the surface? You normally don't care about my classes!::

=I'm just fascinated by the subject material at hand,= Zeela said. =Now hush. I'm listening.=

Sholeh was just going to throw up her hands (mentally) and try to focus on lecture. Which wasn't easy with Zeela constantly wanting her to look up and watch Professor Priest.

"Hunh. That chick looks like the college zombie that used to live across the hall." Kenzi squinted. "Kiss her!"

Please. Like everyone else wasn't thinking it.

Toby totally agreed with you, Jack. Nobody needed to know that.

Unfortunately, telepath. Telepath with no practice shielding. This week was basically the worst.

So Toby was just gonna be over here, clenching his hands into fists to avoid the urge to clamp them over his ears. Logically, he knew that covering his ears wasn't going to be in any way effective at keeping out people's thoughts, but at times like this logic took a little bit of a vacation.

Once the episode was over, Jack returned to the front of class. "What would you do if you released a djinn?" he asked. "Would you use your wishes, or do something else?"

"I'd probably use two wishes, and then use the third to free the djinn in thanks," Jack mused, after a moment of thought. "I mean, I'm not trapped in a lamp or a bottle or anything, forced to grant people's every whim for eternity or anything like that, but I think I can kind of sympathize all the same. I might even feel bad about asking for the first two, but... Even frost spirits have needs."

"Duh," Kenzi said, then paused. "Well, I might get someone to test it out first, because I don't want to wind up naked, invisible, and dead. That's never good. But if the genie didn't screw me over, I'd probably wish her free at the end, because slavery sucks."

"Final wish, freedom for the dijinn," he said. "May wish for protection from the djinn first."

Who might have more than a few wishes this week.

Stiles had not been having a good morning so far so he was just gonna rest his head on the desk for a minute. Or the whole class. Whichever.
