Sex Ed, Friday

When the students arrived for class today, they might notice the seven five-pound bags of flour neatly lined up on the desk. Their purpose would not remain a mystery for long. “Parenthood,” Steve said. “Some of you may come from cultures where it’s common for teenagers to be parents, even expected. Some of you do not. So we’re not going to talk about teen parenthood in particular, but rather the teamwork and partnering that is involved in childrearing. To that end, you have a project for this week with a partner. Your co-parent, if you will.”

“I have been informed that these,” Thor eyed the bags of flour dubiously, “are often employed in this particular educational ritual, symbolizing the child borne of your... union.” He shrugged slightly. “That it is not a living child is not important. What is important is that you pretend for the purposes of the assignment that it is. Think about your philosophies and preferences when it comes to child-rearing. It is possible that you may come in to conflict with your partner, even over something as simple as who will look over your ‘child’ while you are both attending classes. How will you solve these potential problems? As Mr. Rogers said, you must work together as a team. This may mean compromising your position in order to find something mutually agreeable.”

“Remember, in addition to your teamwork, you’re responsible for the wellbeing of your ‘child,’ Steve said. “That means you should be able to account for its whereabouts at all times, and it should not come to harm in any way. The bags have been marked so that we will know the one we receive back next week is the same one we gave you. Anyone who cooks their child will automatically fail the assignment.” Yes, that had happened. “When your names are called, come up and collect your ‘child,’ and then discuss how you will handle your duties. Maybe name it."

As soon as Bay had the flour, she started doodling an elaborate face on it. "Hope you don't mind," she apologized to Jessica. "Just, well -- it'd be my luck to somehow end up with the wrong bag."

"Oh, no, go right ahead," Jessica said. "That's going to make it easier to think of it as a child and not a food ingredient."

Bay smiled up at Jessica as she finished doodling in a fringe of curly hair. "And it's a pretty good kid," she said. "Quiet. No diapers. I'm a fan."

"I'm slightly concerned by the way it doesn't really do anything but sit there and look as cute as a bag of flour can look," Jessica said. "But in a much more accurate way, I'd be even more concerned if it did do anything besides that."

"Any idea what its name is? Or gender, for that matter?"

Bay considered it for a moment, then: "Nope. I am going to be grateful sometimes a bag of flour is just a bag of flour. I don't need sentience in my proto-baked goods. And ... I have no gender preference, but I kind of have this strange compulsion to name it Snickerdoodle."

"I respect Snickerdoodle's right to choose its own gender," Jessica said. "And since it is still inanimate, we should hopefully be able to coast through next week without knowing."

"We don't need to impose sex role garbage on an innocent bag of flour," Bay nodded. "How do you wanna do this? I take Snickerdoodle for three days, you take it for three days, or should we alternate or something?"

Or they could just stick the flour child in a drawer somewhere and hope nobody baked with it, but somehow Bay didn't want to do that. Mr. Rogers and Thor were not teachers to inspire cheating.

"Splitting the days up seems simple enough. If you can keep it out of a cake through Monday, I can finish the job," Jessica said with confidence.

Possibly by putting it in a drawer somewhere. Look, she was being groomed by Nick Fury. That meant cheating when it came to guys like this.

"It's a deal," Bay nodded, then held up a hand. "Co-mom high five?"

"I'm pretty sure that's how every birth ends. With high fives," Jessica said, before moving her flattened hand toward Bay's matching hand with sufficient force to make a small but audible slapping sound, colloquially known as the aforementioned 'high five.'
