The Library, Thursday

Evan's spar with Surreal yesterday had him thinking. And when Evan got to thinking, that's generally when the researching started happening. And that was why there were books on his desk about honing one's natural-born metamorphic abilities. Or, if that failed, the ones about shapeshifting might have what he needed in there.

When he didn't think anyone was looking, he had his hands under his desk and was attempting to shift them into various objects from the examples in the books. No weapons yet, he did respect that this was a library, after all, but he was kind of proud of the teakettle that he'd managed at one point. Who else had teakettle hands, right?

He had to shift back before turning the page, though. Teakettles didn't have fingers.

He probably won't offer you any tea, no.

After what had been kind of a heavy conversation with Evan last week, Victor felt like he should check in with the guy again sooner than, like, the next time they were in the same common room. So: Library trip, complete with food bribe.

"Hey," he said, placing a bakery bag on the desk. "How are you doing? Want a cookie?"

It probably said a lot about just how into these books Evan was getting, really, when he actually jumped a little as Victor spoke. There was a clunk under the desk, the sound of metal thumping against the desk's hardwood, and Evan looked more than a little startled for a half a second, there.

"Victor!" Okay! He could relax, then. Good. Good. Breathing. "Um... hi! Sure, I'd like a cookie, thanks!"

Pay no attention to the last bit of silvery sheen fading from his fingertips as he reached for the offered bag. It was nothing.

Yeah, that was ... kind of a hyper reaction, Evan. Victor side-eyed him as he took the cookie.

"Sorry, wasn't trying to interrupt you," he said doubtfully. "Just ... felt like I should check in after last week."

Evan was maybe a touch excitable, these days. Being jumped by Sabretooth in a dark alleyway tended to leave that impression on a guy.

"No, it's fine. I was just... um..." He glanced down at the books across his desk. "Reading."

Ish.

"I'm doing a little better, I think. People around here have been pretty great. I mean, not just letting me hide away, you know?"

"I'm glad. This place is not good at letting anybody hide," Victor nodded, moving his head so he could see the books. "Any of those any good?"

He didn't think many of them were applicable for him, but it was an interesting subject either way.

"They're pretty great if you want to be able to turn your limbs into, um, cheese," Evan replied, wrinkling his nose down at the book. "Or cotton. I'm still not sure what I'd do with cotton hands, though."

He'd mastered 'mop' once, thanks to the library's shenanigans. Cheese... not so much.

"I don't think these books are quite what I'm looking for, but they're interesting all the same."

"It's interesting," Victor agreed. "I'm not sure what you'd do with cheese hands. Would they grow back if you ate them?"

"Probably," Evan replied, scratching his head and giving the books a weird sort of look. "I mean, it would just be a matter of filling in the, uh... empty spaces, right?"

Man, that sounded weird to say, when talking about a hand.

"But then, I heal pretty fast, so long as there isn't anything pushing my powers down. I've got a lot of control over that sort of thing. I'd just... like more, I guess."

"I think everybody does," Victor said. "You can learn a lot with trial and error, but sometimes it's nice if somebody else has done ... you know. The error part."

"Someone else kind of has," Evan noted, "but I'm pretty sure he didn't write a book about it."

He wrinkled his nose a bit. Really, if he could have the same control over his powers as his genetic predecessor, with none of the crazy, that would suit him just fine.

"So, trial and error I guess it's going to have to be. Surreal asked me in the salle yesterday if I could throw the blades I shifted my hands into, and now I kind of want to figure out how."

Victor was going to need to ponder that one for a while. "I get stuck on how you'd throw them," he said. "Like, the mechanics of it. And how you'd reattach them if you had to. Can your hands pretty much be whatever you want them to be, or are there limits?"

"I think I would just... grow new hands," Evan said, after a moment of pondering that. "Instead of trying to stick blades back to the ends of my arms, I mean. And if there are limits to what I can shapeshift them to... I don't know. People aren't exactly jumping up and down to tell me if I even have an upper limit with my powers."

The train of thought was probably something along the lines of, 'give him a ceiling, and sooner or later he's going to try to break through it.'

"... Or much of anything about what I can do. Up until the other week, I thought a little bit of shapeshifting and some energy blasts were about it."

"And you went way past that the other week?" Victor asked gingerly, and it wasn't that he was jealous, really. Only a villain would be jealous. But when your powers were all based around magnets and electricity, 'a little bit of shapeshifting and some energy blasts,' plus flying, already made it clear Evan was in a different weight class -- even before you added in extra Apocalypse stuff.

Which was evil. And therefore not cool at all, Victor reminded himself.

Really.

Evan didn't necessarily want to be in a different weight class, even! But if he was, he had made up his mind that he was going to need to know what he could do, so that things like what happened the other week couldn't happen again.

"I brought down a building and I nearly killed Sabretooth," Evan murmured. "I would have, if Logan hadn't stopped me. I... yeah. Way past."

Everything around him had burned.

Thursdaaaay. Feels like a Mondaaaaay.

Guess I should put on pants again.
