History of Art | February 14th - Period 3

Autolycus stood at the front of the class rubbing his hands together. The typical sheaves of handouts at the front of the class.

"The art period known as the Renaissance was part of a greater cultural change occurring throughout Europe over a period of approximately two centuries.

"Some of the notable painters of the time were da Vinci, Raphael, Botticelli, van Eyck, Bosch and DrĂ¼her.

"Alright, for your homework this week I want one hundred words on the Renaissance artist of your choice. You have the rest of the class period to work on it and discuss with your classmates.

"Also you have a midterm coming up, so remember to go over your notes from previous classes."

In the Renaissance, people learned how to draw again, which they hadn't been able to do for like a thousand years. They also learned perspective, although if you look at the butts hanging out of some of the paintings (http://www.wga.hu/art/s/salviati/charity.jpg), you wonder about that. Also, have you seen some of the women Michelangelo sculpted (http://homepage3.nifty.com/kenkitagawa1/Michelangelo-Night.jpg)? Guys with boobs, man. I mean, so have nothing against the male form, but I also like women. Seriously.

Oh, and Florence and Venice were having a painting war. Florence said that design and drawing were the most important part of painting. Venice said that color was. I suppose Venice won in the end, since we now have paintings that are big blobs of color and no drawing.
