History of Art | February 14th - Period 3

Autolycus stood at the front of the class rubbing his hands together. The typical sheaves of handouts at the front of the class.

"The art period known as the Renaissance was part of a greater cultural change occurring throughout Europe over a period of approximately two centuries.

"Some of the notable painters of the time were da Vinci, Raphael, Botticelli, van Eyck, Bosch and DrĂ¼her.

"Alright, for your homework this week I want one hundred words on the Renaissance artist of your choice. You have the rest of the class period to work on it and discuss with your classmates.

"Also you have a midterm coming up, so remember to go over your notes from previous classes."

"Okay, so we go from ancient Egypt, where people look like paper dolls to Greece and Rome, where they look realistic, to the Middle Ages, where they look like paper dolls, to the Renaissance, where they look realistic. So... next step... paper dolls again, right?"

In the Renaissance, people learned how to draw again, which they hadn't been able to do for like a thousand years. They also learned perspective, although if you look at the butts hanging out of some of the paintings (http://www.wga.hu/art/s/salviati/charity.jpg), you wonder about that. Also, have you seen some of the women Michelangelo sculpted (http://homepage3.nifty.com/kenkitagawa1/Michelangelo-Night.jpg)? Guys with boobs, man. I mean, so have nothing against the male form, but I also like women. Seriously.

Oh, and Florence and Venice were having a painting war. Florence said that design and drawing were the most important part of painting. Venice said that color was. I suppose Venice won in the end, since we now have paintings that are big blobs of color and no drawing.

Hieronymus Bosch was a prolific Dutch painter of the 15th and 16th centuries. Bosch used images of demons, half-human animals and machines to create some pretty bizarre painings that were meant to represent the failings of man. And I mean really bizarre. And I say that as someone who goes to Fandom High.

I mean, we're talking a stomach turned into an instrument of some kind, and someone's rib cage as an apartment, and bird-headed creatures eating people like popsicles. I mean it's pretty clear this guy was high on some serious drugs, and really I hope the paintings are worth a lot on the open market because I wouldn't want to have to keep one around any longer than I absolutely had to.

{*cough* this so happened on Feb 14th. Yes.}

Renaissance artists were very into painting religious scenes. Which I guess the Greeks and Romans were too, but different religion. You'd think the Biblical ones would have less random high-flying male nudity, but you'd be surprisingly wrong. Though there's a bit more appearance of convenient drapey things in the Renaissance, a fact for which some of us are extremely grateful, depending on the gender of the painting's subject. Also, Naked Venus on the Half-Shell totally makes up for the finger-touchy God and Adam. I'm... not sure it makes up for the statue of David, though. I'm not sure anything does.

Michelangelo was a painter, sculptor and architect that created some of the most beautiful works of the Renaissance. These works included the Sistine Chapel, La Pieta, Bacchus and David. In his work as an architect he left an imprint still seen to this day on the city of Rome, particularly in the magnificent dome of St. Peter's Basilica.
