Supernatural Studies, Wednesday, Period 1

Class met in the Danger Shop today, which had been programmed to resemble a large Victorian sitting room lit by kerosene lamps. While there were couches and armchairs around the perimeter of the room, the center of the space was taken up by two large round tables surrounded by chairs. Boxed ouija boards rested on a separate side table, and a library was just visible through an arched doorway beyond that.

"Welcome to my humble abode," Jack said solemnly, and then smiled to show he was joking. "We're still speaking about ghosts and spirits of the undead this week. In some worlds spiritualism -- talking to ghosts -- was a fad in the late 19th century. The belief was that some people were able to call forth the dead through a ceremony called a seance and have conversations, or get advice, or what have you. Sometimes the spirit spoke through this medium. Other times, there'd be an unexplained tapping or rapping sound to show the spirit was responding. Ouija boards, on which a spirit moves a pointer to spell out a message, were popular for amateur use."

He briefly explained how a seance worked -- the hands around the table, the closed eyes, the chanting.

"In many worlds, most of this was a hoax. The medium would make things up, or say something so vague it was almost certainly true. In one famous case, sisters made ghosts 'speak' by cracking the joints in their feet."

"But every once in a while, something unexplainable would happen. And that's what I've programmed into the shop today. Look around: There are two tables set up for seances. The first people to sit at each are our mediums, or you can agree as a group to use the Ouija board if you prefer. There's also the library over there--"

Jack was interrupted at that by the thud of books falling from shelves.

" --Which has a poltergeist programmed in to say hello. Go chat with him, if you want. Extra credit to anyone who gets him to tell you what he wants and carries it out."

The poltergeist was intriguing, and Kate made her way over to the library to investigate.

Real or not real? She wasn't so sure they'd ere real. After all, the dead just came back to life, right?

Hello to you too.

"What's with the book throwing?" she commented. "No one throws books. That's just rude."

Kate snorted. "...okay, fine, I'd've probably done that too. Go on then, have fun."

After escaping the table, Sholeh made for the library. That's where she felt most comfortable anyway.

Even with the hovering candlestick, it wasn't all that different than the shenanigans that the Fandom Library put her through on a weekly basis. That being said, seeing it in the air, she hurried over to grab it.

"Oh no!" she said, reaching for the candlestick. "What if this falls? The whole room could go up in a trice!"

"If these books end up on fire, I will find a real medium who will turn you over her knee and spank you!" Sholeh threatened. Because endangering books was not on. "If you have something to say, we'll find a way for you to say it, but right now, you're acting like a spoiled child and I won't stand for it!"

Since Mercy could actually see and talk to ghosts the idea of meeting a fake poltergeist sounded kind of fun, so she made her way over.

"Woah," Mercy said. "That's kind of cool. I've always wondered how you guys could do that."

It took her a minute to catch on, but then she got it. And thanked all that was for growing up with old werewolves, including one who loved being a pain and teasing her with Morse code. She focused closely the second time around and then laughed.

She was rusty, but she thought it had just said that they practiced.

"Really. Well, that explains everything," she said with a grin.

Sure, Anna would deal with one of her lessers a poltergeist. It might be interesting. She stepped into the library and looked around.

Anna reached out to stop the globe with her hand. "Cute," she said to the air, her voice completely unimpressed.

"Helllooooo... okay, so, where did you put your bank account book?"

What? The ghost couldn't take it with him!

Kenzi's jaw dropped. Then she was bounding across the room with a high-pitch squeeeee! And trying the safe. Annnnd frowning.

"Okay, can you move this thing for the combination, or do we have to play rap-out-the-combination?"

"Ahh! Seven... 18? ... eight. And.. .holy crap, I lost count. Start over! On that second one!" Kenzi was frantically trying to spin that dial fast enough.
