Flight- Monday- 3rd period

The students had been instructed to meet in the Danger Shop, where they'd find themselves in a large field with hot air balloons in front of them. They'd also find Jaina, who was back to her correct gender and was shielding like woah, because sdhsdhs, basically.

"I did tell you you'd by flying all sorts of craft, didn't I?" she began. "For those of you who don't know, this is a hot air balloon. People get in these, fly through the air, and let the wind take them where it will. I think it's crazy, personally, but as long as we're in the Danger Shop, that's sort of the place for crazy."

She gave them a short lecture on how to actually work the things- most importantly how to get down- and said, "I want you to pair up in twos or threes if you want and take one of these things up for a while. And please, no one push anyone else out of the baskets, that's just uncalled for."

"Why," Victor asked Cade with some distaste as he looked at the balloons, "would anybody want to go up in one of those in 2013?"

He paused. "And do you wanna pair with me?"

Victor was a stellar salesman.

Karina was back to her normal self! That alone was cause for a good mood today!

She glanced around for a partner.

Evan was actually pretty excited about this! It was flying, but not at the breakneck speeds that he was used to! Actually, it would be kind of relaxing!

And that's why he approached the nearest person who seemed to be looking for a partner without really checking to see who it was, first.

"A hot air balloon," he was almost chirping, yes. "Doesn't that sound- Oh!" Oh... "Hi, Karina."

Awkward.

Because really? These things looked clunky and unmaneuverable and slower than a sleepy bantha with a bad leg. What fun was this going to be?

Victor stepped into a balloon and started doing all the pre-launch checks Jaina had shown them.

Not that there was much to check, really. "I'm not sure I understand how to steer this thing."

It wasn't electronic, so he couldn't cheat. Unfortunately.

"So, my idea is," Topher said, stepping into the basket of one of the balloons before walking backwards out again to verify that he liked the color of the balloon on top. "Good, I like green. My idea: we do not fly over the water because this sweater vest is dry-clean only and I'd rather not have to swim in the event that a leaf attacks us and we wind up falling."

Anakin was already examining the (really, really primitive) propulsion systems, but he had to stop and give Topher a disbelieving look. "This would be less of a problem if we could protect the balloon from leaves, but this thing probably can't generate enough power to spare for deflector shielding."

Anakin. Stop complaining.

At least Emily didn't have to worry about being shot down...Suddenly being up there didn't feel like such a good idea.

Oh, please. Fire was involved in moving the things. Like Ace wouldn't read the instructions three times before the lecture was even finished and be jumping in the basket and ready to roar off as soon as somebody decided to join her? Assuming she waited that long.

It wasn't that Anakin could tell for sure that something was bothering Jaina, because of the aforementioned shielding, but he had a feeling.

Which was why, after class, he came over and without asking just tried to offer her a hug.

FYI you could get me to do things like bungee jumping and skydiving, but never this. I just remember when you were in grade school and you'd send helium balloons up with cards on them to be mailed back from wherever they landed, and you'd get random ones from like Alaska or find them in trees. And I never wanted to fly to Alaska or into trees.

The one time we did that, mine didn't have enough helium in it and kind of limped along about 15 feet up before blowing out of sight (and probably into a tree).

I went up in one at a state fair when I was a kid -- they were tethered to the ground, so basically you just went up and hung around for a while.

But riding in one without a tether and a trained pilot? Um. No.

For some reason, where I live is prime balloon flight territory. Every summer dozens of hot air balloons take off at once, filled with crazy people.

My dad used to take me out to see it sometimes. They were pretty.
