The last thing Evan had really been expected upon coming into the library were the puddles on the floor from yesterday's spontaneous bursts of water.

... Okay, no, that was a lie. Puddles on the floor weren't all that weird, not after going to his last school. The last thing Evan had expected was to come in to find the books, all dressed up in plastic waterproof sleeves and yellow galoshes, actually splashing around in them.

"How are you even wearing boots? None of you have feet!"

It was going to be a mystery for the ages.

It was pretty much impossible to go wrong with cheese. And bacon. Seriously. Evan's eyes went wide as he looked at the dish, making an 'o' with his mouth.

"That looks amazing," he breathed, and then looked back up at Zhahar with a broad smile on his face. "Thank you so much! It's been a long time since I've seen macaroni that looks... it looks decadent."

Yes, he was going to break out the vocabulary for this one. That was how awesome it was.

Aww, yeah. Busting out the SAT word-prep for this. That's how Zhahar knew she'd done good. By the time the sisters were done feeding Evan, he'd need his morphing powers just to fit in his pants again.

"You're welcome," she said, giving him a smile that was a touch smug. She hadn't said anything (and never would!), but hearing Sholeh get all the credit for the brownies on Wednesday had been a little hurtful. It had been a joint effort! "I wanted to make sure you had a great birthday is all."

"It's really starting to look like it's going to be," he admitted, still maybe just a touch awestruck as he looked up from the dish to the girl who had brought it. "Have I ever mentioned how great everyone here is? Because they are. Great, I mean."

And then he was incoming for a hug, ready or not.

"Thank you, Zhari."

Awww. Evan hugs were the best. "You're welcome," Zhahar said, hugging him right back. "I just hope you like it. And you know you're one of the great ones, too, right? Because you are. Great, I mean."

"I'm okay, at least," Evan replied with a little smile as he gave her one more squeeze and then stepped back again. "It helps that I'm surrounded by good friends."

Not family, so much. He missed family so much it hurt, some days. But friends, definitely.

And Zhahar couldn't even sympathize about leaving family behind; she had her sisters with her always. She couldn't imagine what it would be like without them. Granted, she could claim that she did, since having her sisters with her wasn't exactly common knowledge.

Butsaying so felt...wrong. Like sympathizing with him that way would cheapen what he felt. So she didn't.

"I'm glad to be one of them," she said, offering a warm smile instead. "You're a good person to be a good friend to."

"I try," Evan replied. "I have friends that are worth being a good person for. You, Angel back in New York, Karla, Yeul, Sholeh, Loki, Cassidy, Liara, Victor. Topher, I guess..."

His... list was short-ish. He really needed to get out more.

"A lot of people I want to make sure I'm not letting down."

His list was longer than hers was, and longer than Sholeh's as well. So he was doing at least all right in that regard.

"I think you're the kind of person who wouldn't let people down even if they didn't know you, Evan," Zhahar said softly. "You're a really good person."

Well, that was kind of the point of being a hero... wasn't it?

"Well, there are a lot of good people out there," he replied, shrugging his shoulders a tiny bit. "I have a lot of role models to live up to, too."

Like his uncle, who was totally awesome and was not at all the most murderous member of a secret mutant hit squad. Honest.

Suuuure he wasn't. Keep telling yourself that, kiddo.

"Well, I think sometime soon, you're going to be a role model for other people," Zhahar said warmly. "And I'll be proud to say I know you."
