Fandom Invasions: A Survival Guide- Friday, Period One

How were they all up at such an ungodly hour? That looked more or less to be the expression that Jono was wearing as he dragged himself, sans crutches, into the classroom. There were, sometimes, benefits to having pushy healers as friends, yes. Added benefits were the ability to hold things in both hands, because he was carrying a coffee in one, and his lesson plan in the other, like any healthy two-thumbed primate should.

"Good morning, class," he greeted as he set his coffee on the desk and tossed his lesson plan into the recycling bin. "I'm Jonothon Starsmore, and those of you who have been in my class before should know by now to just call me Jono. It doesn't look like there are any students in the room who are new to Fandom and its weirdness, so I'm not going to bother addressing why I'm blue, and I'm fairly certain you've all seen an invasion or two around here as well, so that makes my job today at least somewhat simpler. Still, I'm going to bore you for a moment with a lecture about them all the same. You're welcome."

Look, he hadn't finished his coffee yet. He was allowed to snark at least a little bit, this early in the day.

"This island, as we are all aware, is a little... off. I'm sure most of you know what it's like to have your gender switched about, or to wake up as a small child. And, while the dodos were the most dangerous thing to invade last semester, you've likely all been warned about bigger, more deadly threats to the island, as well. Umbridge would be one, for those who were here during the summertime. And there was a thing with some hallucinogenic fog and some half-monkey, half-pony monsters back when I was a student here that I'm certain none of you would remember."

Thus making Jonothon feel old. Thanks, kids.

"The point is, there doesn't seem to be any upper limit to the sort of nasty things that hit the island, and if you're planning on staying here until you graduate, odds are high that you'll have to deal with something more fearsome than a pack of mind-addled extinct Madagascar birds somewhere along the way. I obviously can't prepare you for any eventuality - you can't exactly remember what you've been taught in this class if time gets undone and re-written again, for example - but I hope to be able to give you all at least a foundation for getting through future invasions in one piece."

He leaned back against his desk and had himself a mouthful of coffee. Mmm, coffee.

"Today, however, we're going to embrace that time-honoured first week tradition, and go around the room and introduce ourselves, mostly to give me an idea of what I need to focus on this semester. I'd like your name, class, any experience you might have with invasion situations, or, alternatively, what sort of skills you have that you can put to use when all hell breaks loose. For example, I'm Jono, Fandom High alumni and the teacher of this class, and I've seen more invasions and near-ends-of-the-world than I hope any of you will ever have to, between here, the home realities of friends of mine, and back in my own. I don't have any powers these days, but you pick up a thing or two about soldiering after playing hero in a world that hates and fears you. I can hold my own in a fight without being able to blow up small buildings with my face, thank you."

He wrinkled his nose a bit. God, he hated that 'hates and fears' line, but it got the message across well enough.

"Your turn. Name, class, experience, and skills that you bring to the table. We'll start on the useful stuff next week." A beat. "And Sholeh, congratulations, you're my TA this semester. Please, contain your joy."

"Paddra Nsu-Yeul," she said, smiling slightly. "I am a Freshman, I have zero experience with invasion situations," which was not exactly true, except in the Fandom sense, "and I do not think I have any useful skills for invasions that may happen."

... At least she didn't seem bothered by that? Or maybe she should be bothered by it because it was rather disturbing that she wasn't.

"Well, we'll do what we can to make certain you're safe if you find yourself caught in one," Jono replied, offering Yeul a slight smile in return. "I've given your guardian my word on that front."

Even if Jono hadn't at all been intimidated by the man in purple with the big sword. Honestly, Caius.

"I'm Korra, I'm a junior, I'm not that familiar with invasions here, and I'm a bender."

"I'm afraid I'm not entirely certain what a bender is," Jono admitted, looking thoughtfully at Korra. "But it's something that'd come in useful if it comes down to a fight, I'll assume?"

It seemed like a safe bet around here.

"Marasiah Fel, sophomore. I was here over the summer." Which meant that she was here for Umbridge and didn't really want to get into it, due to all the dying she did that week. "I suppose I'm a good fighter and calm in bad situations."

"Calm in bad situations will do you a world of good," Jono noted, offering her a small smile. If she was here through the summer but not bringing up specifics, odds were there was a reason for that, and he decided to leave it be, for the time being. They'd probably touch on Umbridge again later in the semester, anyhow. "A rational mind means that you might catch something that other people would miss. That's important."

"I'm Ace. Junior, and I was here for the summer." Pause. "And the dodos. Those things bite!" Which she'd learned after getting way too close during her attempts to toss fish into their mouths to smarten them up. Perhaps she'd skip that detail. "I blow stuff up. With bombs, not my face."

"Fortunately, most people use bombs," Jono assured her. "I didn't run afoul of the dodos, myself. I suspect that's because the little blighters can't fly, and I wasn't in the mood to deal with their stupidity at the time. Were they terribly dangerous, biting aside?"

"My name is Liara T'Soni, and I am a freshman," Liara said quietly. "I have only been here since this summer, and that is all the experience I have had with... invasions."

She wove her fingers together. "I am a biotic," she said, "Not a terribly gifted one--" It would take some time before she realized that wasn't true, "--but it has served me well so far."

"I remember the summer," Jono mused, giving her a thoughtful once-over. "You were able to put that ability to good use. And you were a cool head through most of that ordeal besides. That'll serve you well, Liara."

"I'm Charles Villette but I uh, go by Chaz?" Chaz looked completely uncomfortable in his own skin. "I don't think I have any relevant experience." He said, ignoring the time he broke a car with sugar.

"I'm Sholeh Zeela a Zhahar," she answered, breaking through her fog of 'TA? Whut?' long enough to answer. Because otherwise she would just look stupid and then Jono might reconsider and and and!

"I was here for the weird other world with the pink lady. I was also here for the dodos, but I was a fawn at the time, so I didn't do much. Umm, and I'm really good at research?"

Bucky stood on his desk and bowed to everyone. "My name is Bucky Katt, and I am a freshcat," he announced. "Everyone, check me out and learn something: I am the pinnacle of evolution. I have razor-sharp teeth and claws, lightning-fast reflexes, and built-in night-vision goggles. I'm nature's perfect killing machine!"

He looked around the room, expecting applause.

"Oh, and I was here all summer, and I don't remember any dodo birds. You're a dirty, dirty liar."

"I'm Arietty Clock," Arietty said, yelling through her megaphone. One of these days, she'd find a better way to do this. "I'm a freshman, and, well, I was here for the Umbridge thing, though I didn't really understand what was going on until afterwards, and the dodos, which didn't really affect me at all." The joys of being very, very, very small. "But I did have to deal with a biologist invading my community back home and abducting my parents. I had to jump out of a plane!"

She looked pretty excited about that, still, yes.

"And I'm very good at hiding and getting around without anyone knowing I'm there. So that's been useful."

"Mercy Thompson. I'm a junior and I've been here about a year and a half now, so I've dealt with some of the invasions. I don't really..." she hesitated. "I'm not really sure what skills I have that are all that useful. Though I'm a really good shot and I can fight some."

"Alex Aaron, sophomore and a day late. I've been here for a year and a half, now, and, uh, I'm pretty good with a sword and stuff, and, I mean, I'm from New York so invasions aren't exactly new."

Which only made sense if you were from a certain handful of worlds, really.
