Library, Monday

It being the first official day of the new semester, it seemed as if all the books were on their very best behaviour. There were no indoor thunderstorms, nothing was wrapped in cellophane, none of the books were mysteriously appearing and disappearing, or battling each other...

There was a stack of bridal magazines on the counter when William first arrived, but since they stayed put on the shelf after he put them away, William didn't think much of it as he settled down with the newest issue of Scientific American.

Where not even Special Collections is so much as making a peep.

If you can manage to tear his attention away from an article about the future of science (http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=science-of-the-next-150-years).

They had better be on their best behaviour, if they knew what was what.

John came thundering in, coat flapping behind him, a scone in one hand and a cigarette in another.

"Right, which one are you?" he asked, flicking out the last of his ash and stubbing out the smoke before tossing it in the trash. "And are you always here this bloody early?"

Once upon a time, such bluntness would likely have shocked William. However, at this point he'd dealt extensively with not one, but two Sherlock Holmeses.

"William Murdoch, sir," he said as he stood, setting the magazine down on the counter. "And customarily, yes. I don't take much stock in being idle, and there's always something to be done here."

John just blinked at him for a moment.

"Dear lord, mate, you're about as clean-cut as they come, aren't you? Nevermind, if there's one thing I need to know about the library, what should it be? Besides 'Never read the mysterious Ancient Latin Text aloud,' everyone ought to know that one by now."

"Special Collections," William said, pointing to the currently deceptively innocuous looking door, "is even more prone to flights of whimsy than the rest of the island. I'd advise you not to enter alone, or at the very least," he decided, eyeing John carefully and concluding that he seemed to be very much the sort who would do just that despite any warnings, "inform someone of your intentions, should something go wrong." Because something most likely would.

"No worries on that front, 'm here specifically to keep that thing in line," John assured him. "Specialized skillset, you could say."

"But what's this about whimsy and the rest of the island? Don't tell me I have to worry about magic going wonky everywhere else, too?"

"I could tell you that," William said slowly, "but that would be a lie, and I try to avoid those."

Who will find a pot of tea being kept warm for him, should he stop by.

Ta, mate. Tea was always appreciated.

John was indeed there, although faint cursing was probably occasionally heard from his office.
